My Psion 3mx (2 mb, backlit) is rather ill.
(the well known battery cable problem + after I opened it
to check it out, the PC transfer won't work.)

Someone recommended POS ltd for repairs,
but they'll charge you 65 pounds for repairing a 3mx.

Anyone know of a cheaper place?

Look for a second hand unit, you may find one less expensive than the repair
cost. Bear in mind that you may end up with similar or other problems. POS
do a good and thorough job and are generally highly recommended.

There aren't (and never was) a lot of repair places for Psion's, just be
thankful they still offer the service so long after production ceased. Pay
the money for what is essentially an obsolete (though useful machine) or
look at the Palm and PPC ranges.

POS are expensive, but very, very good - you'll get your machine back in
absolutely pristine condition, pretty much as new. Their prices have also
not increased in 7 years - that's how much I paid in 1997 to get my old 3a
fixed.

You pay for expertise and service, which POS offer in abundance - if you
value your machine, it's worth the money.

Thanks for your comments.
Just wanted to tell that I've had a Palm m500 for the past three
years.
It's nice, but it's given me a LOT of problems that I had to solve
along the way, and it's still not reliable enough to use
professionally on the road. I have to reset it quite often.
And just the fact that the stylus coming with the Palm
has a built in thing for resetting the Palm should tell you all.

I had my Psion 3a, then 3c and finally 3mx for appr. 6 years
and it never... *never* failed me.
The batteries lasted for ever and it never ever crashed.

I have to admit, I miss it very much <sob>.

So maybe I'll pour out the cash to get it fixed.

Or does anyone here has a cheap 3mx (2 mb, backlit) for sale?
(got 3 kid girls and a wife with a credit card :-)

Sometimes POS have reconditioned machines for sale, worth checking (or
asking them- there may be a waiting list if they have none but should give
an idea of price). Compare this to repair for your needs.

I have a ppc now that I'm getting used to. The screen is far superior to my
5mx, battery life is poor. After many months I find I'm now taking the ppc
with me, leaving the Psion behind. My next purchase will be a car power
adapter- the universal one I used with the Psion won't work with it even
when selecting the right sized tip- I've tried a few different car
chargers/tips and none work with the ppc- I'd love to know what they've done
to stop them working/make me buy their charger.

I have used POS for many years and can thoroughly recommend them. Try Ebay
if you want a second-hand Psion - I've seen some good bargains there. The
going rate for a good 3mx is still quite high, a reflection of the build
quality and usability.

Just seen this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14405&item=4131556221&rd=1
could be worth a bid but I expect it will go up a fair bit higher - probably
to about £80-90.

Despite now owning a Psion Clie (palm OS), I still use my 3mx for just about
everything practical. Psion's built-in functions are beautifully designed
and easy to use. The Clie is great for playing music, viewing photos and
suchlike - and some of the games are nifty - but I feel slightly bereft that
we have not seen what Psion could have evolved into.

<rant> I have still not found any ppc or palm software to match the
practicality and user-friendliness of the 3mx Agenda and Data functions.
Especially the alarms. And the battery life. And Psion Scrabble.
</rant>

Please excuse my interjection - I'll just go and have a nice cup of tea and
a sit down and I should be all right... :-)

Mike

It's evolved into something that's not made any more. Dinosaur bones around
the corner that may be viewable in science museums, and on the odd History
Channel program. Life moves on.......

Pocket Informant is the best all round portable diary and PIM application
I've seen, it knocks spots off the Psion. It's a buy not built in thing
though.
