You obviously have not read the user manual. You need to feed the
fireflies to keep them quiet when they are at work. They are located in
the same compartment as the backup battery. If you don't feed them, they
hum loudly to get you attention. It is their way to beg for food.

Hi All,

I just got my Psion 5 converted my old Psion 3a stuff, and love my new
play thingy.. which is very usefull as well.

With backlight on, the unit generates a noticable humming sound though.

Does anybody else experience this?

I think they all hum with the backlight on.

All backlights hum or buzz. From personal experiance, Sharp Zaurus,
Newton 130, Cassio A-11, HP320LX and my Psion Series 5 all hum or buzz
when the backlight is invoked.

It really is nothing. The buzz comes from a transformer which generates the
required voltage from the batteries to power the display.

My 3c's backlight barely humms at all. The 5's humm is noticeable in
quiet situations.

My GPS unit humms but ever so slightly.

The 5 is the one unit which humms the most so far as I have seen.

Hi

I have an LCD watch that also uses Electro Luminance to
light the display.

It does not humm (least I cannot hear it), but the manual
says that it will hum and that humming is normal.
It is supposed to humm! (goes with the techmology I guess).
Like bees I guess, they humm too.

Will

Try the Newton 130, you could use the backlight buzz as an alarm...

You should bring it back, it must be faulty!

Speaking of backlighting ....

I just bought a Psion 5, and find my screen
from very difficult to impossible to read
in many/most lighting situations, even with
backlighting (to preserve battery power,
I prefer not to use backlighting).

How is mine malfunctioning? I would appreciate
any help. Thanks.

It's not. That's just the unavoidable result of having a digitizer in
front of the screen. You can adjust the contrast a little but if you
actually want to be able to see clearly you'll need to get a Geofox.
