Has any body tried connecting Series5's to Linux?
I'm running Mandrake Linux v6.1. But still dropping back to
Windows98 and PsiWin to connect to my Series5 R1 EPOC v1.01(145) to
back up. print and generally move files.
I've managed to get a terminal up by starting a getty on the serial
port from inittab and logging in from the Psions comms program. I'm
just working out what login script I need in "Control Panel /
Internet" to get a PPP link up. Then I reckon I'll be able shift
email between the two and the outside world with the Psion using the
Linux box as a mail server. I guess my next step is to hunt down some
TCP software for the Psion like ftp, telnet and ping, which should let
me move files between the two.
But I'm wondering if there is a more elegant solution. What does the
"Remote Link" software you select from the Psions System screen do?
Does it open up a PPP link with obtained IP addresses, maybe logging
in with the owners name and then exporting the filesystem as perhaps
an MSDOS file system? I can but pray to the gods of Good-Fortune and
Not-Deliberately-Making-Things-Difficult-By-Using-Odd-Comms-Protocols
that this is the case, but you never know.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks for taking the time to read this message.
Jim

Hi James,

have look at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Psion-HOWTO-3.html
This should help you. plptools might be the program you're looking
for. it allows you to mount you psion via NFS and also gives you a kind
of ftp connection to your psion.

Thanks Sven,
this looks very promising for moving files and doing backups. I
downloaded and installed the RPM of plptools version 0.6-1 from
ftp://ftp.to.com/pub/psion/RPMS/plptools-devel-0.6-1.i386.rpm
but I get errors;

Jul 25 20:35:37 spleen ncpd: /usr/sbin/ncpd
Jul 25 20:35:37 spleen ncpd: : error in loading shared libraries:
Jul 25 20:35:37 spleen ncpd: /lib/libreadline.so.3
Jul 25 20:35:37 spleen ncpd: :
Jul 25 20:35:37 spleen ncpd: undefined symbol: BC
Jul 25 20:35:37 spleen ncpd:
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen psion: ncpd startup failed
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen plpnfsd: /usr/sbin/plpnfsd
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen plpnfsd: : error in loading shared libraries:
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen plpnfsd: /lib/libreadline.so.3
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen plpnfsd: :
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen plpnfsd: undefined symbol: BC
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen plpnfsd:
Jul 25 20:35:38 spleen psion: plpnfsd startup failed

So I tried downloading the source and compiling it, but again got
undefined externals warnings.
The documentation mentioned that if I'm using SuSE Linux I'll need
the libs "libgpp" and "gppshare". I'm actually using Mandrake Linux
6.1 but tried installing it anyway but it didn't make any difference.

I'm out of ideas now so I'm going to continue to get PPP to work,
unless anyone else has any ideas.

hmm, got no iedea how to fix this. Maybe you could use p3nfsd (I dont't
have the URL at hand.) and a Program called NFSC [Psion side]. They are
also distributed in a compiled version.
