Hello all

I've been researching the Psion 5mx as a possible (probable)
replacement to my Palm Pilot. I think it's exactly what I'm after save
one thing - no wifi. (I can do without wifi, but still...it would be
nice to have as my campus has many wifi hotspots)

Have researched the topic a little, it seems that the 5mx cannot
support a CF type wifi card because it cannot operate with the door
open.

I'd like to ask - would using one of these get me around that problem?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000JF4Y/103-8577617-2514230?v=glance&n=172282

It's says "PC card adaptor", which presumably means PCMCIA cards, which
presumably also means Wifi?

Can one run get wifi in this manner? Would this be likely to work? Or
not? And if not, is it because the lack of drivers or something else?

I don't understand. Are you saying that no Wifi card will work at all,
or that only 16 bit wifi cards could work?

I googled for 16 bit Wifi card and came up with a bunch of models.

Eg Gigabyte GN-WLMR101 WIFI 802.11b 16-Bit LAN PCMCIA Card

5MX does not support WiFi 802.11b. Many have tried and all have
failed, alas!
The Psion Netbook does but is a much larger, and more expensive
option.
Frankly, if you plan to use Hotspots, you are better off buying a
second hand Win 98SE laptop, for about the same price as a Psion.
Internet + PDA screen = Early onset Blindness

And the Amazon web page says the item (PC-Card adapter) is not available...

That sounds like a challange :>

But wait - does this imply that it might supports 802.11a? I may try
fiddling around with that just out of spite - I believe this is the
Psioneer way :P

I recently won a Toshiba Libretto 70 on ebay. You're not kidding :(

I might try a Jornada 720 - apparantly it approximates the size and
weight of the Psion 5mx quite well? But it seems the Psion community is
more active with freeware / shareware?

Thank you all for the help, btw! Appreciated

The Psion PC Card adaptor supports only modem cards, I'm afraid.

It presents the modem card as a standard serial port to the Psion, so -
as far as the Psion is concerned - the PC Card adaptor + modem card
looks appears just like an external modem, controlled by normal modem
AT cards.

WiFi cards are not presentable as a serial port, and so will not work
in the Psion PC Card adaptor.

..I have a Psion PC Card adaptor, and have tested this!

Simon.

Psion 5mx + Linux, and you can use wifi cards.

Really? Can you elaborate?
I understood you needed to boot Linux from the CF card, and leave the
card in. Where then do you install the WiFi?
(I have never tried installing Linux mind. I use 5MX for EPOC, why
change an OS which is so stable and useful!)

I second the request for further elaboration
