a friend of mine is thinking about buying a Palm Pilot III, however
he is not sure (and neither am I), if he can connect to Compuserve,
and read his e-mail when on the road. It would seem that you can,
however, I don't know if anyone has tried it...
Thanks, Alex.

Regarding logging into Compuserve from the Palm III: I just did it. You'll
be receiving an actual Email I sent from the Palm III while logged into
Compuserve.
The Palm III has a "Compuserve" service set up already with proper login
script. You supply your local phone number, username, and password. This
logs you in with Compuserve PPP, which lets you use any Internet-enabled
applications like mail agents, web browsers, and news readers on the Palm
organizer.
In order to exchange Email, you'll need POP/SMTP service with Compuserve,
which they now provide. I don't have Compuserve POP mailbox, because I use a
regular internet service for my Email. I just use Compuserve for a PPP
connection, and go through them to my other Internet Service Provider to get
mail. But you CAN sign up for thatinternet-enabled Email service with
Compuserve, and I don't believe it costs you any more per month.
You'll also need a POP/SMTP-capable program or agent. I just use the internal
Palm Mail application, along with the TG Postman freeware program to send SMTP
mail and receive POP mail. TG Postman interacts with your built-in Palm Mail
application's database folders and goes out to an Internet POP mailbox, gets
your mail, and puts it in your Palm Mail inbox. Likewise, it will also take
your Palm Mail outbox and send it to an Internet SMTP server.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Also, please check out our web site. We are nearing release of the
"Parachute", a slim PCMCIA adapter for the back of the Palm III. With it, you
can use a fast and compact PCMCIA modem, cellular modem, or wireless modem to
connect.
