The problem I am seeing is that I can get the palm to
connect just fine and can ping it but as soon as it
connects I can no longer see the internet through the
Ethernet connection. It seems that somehow the DCC connection
is blocking it as I can suddenly see out again as soon
as I break the DCC connection. I have tried every variation
I can think of. Any suggestions here as to how to configure
the TCP/IP stacks and such?
Thanks for any help or pointers here.

Before you buy.
You need to use the dial-up server (Plus, win98SE?) rather than DCC. Then
the Palm "dials" into you computer and connects with a typical PPP link and
you and the Palm share you ethernet connection.

I had no luck getting the Palm to connect using the modem setting
and "00" as suggested but did get it to connect using direct serial
cable connection. However, unlike the guy on the site, I can't get
the proxy to "see" the outside world because the Ethernet connection
is still basically blocked. I am using a IIIx by the way.
The problem seems to be that no matter what I try (and I have tried a
lot of things) the DCC connection ends up blocking the Ethernet
connection. I heard dial up server might solve this but I can't get
dial up server to recognize the serial port as a possible service port.
That is, it sees my internal modem just fine and will listen for
connection on it but I can't figure out how to get it to listen on COM2
where the palm cradle is hooked to. I am running out of ideas.
Let me know if you come up with something new or have success.
I am curious as to whether 2000 adds some new features here
that will help.

Take a look at this: http://palm.com/products/enterprise/ethernet.html
I wonder when this will be available. This is really what I wanted
but didn't think it existed. I was also thinking about the possibility
of connecting a notebook Ethernet card to the palm as I have seen
with CE devices but didn't know much about how to go about it. I
am anxious to see when this will come out and for how much.

am anxious to see this when it comes out but think its way too
expensive ($250). This is my only beef with Palm devices - too
expensive compared to comparably equipped (ie: ram, processor, etc..)
CE devices. $250 for a 10Mbps Ethernet adaptor is pretty pricey
too, especially given that it is device specific. What would be nice
would be a way to interface the palm to a more common
laptop Ethernet card.

Note that when it comes up the 1st time on W2K you may have to exit the
program (you may need to 'end the task') then bring it up again.
I configured my Palm this way:
Under Connections: made up a new name
(You could use direct serial but I like to name my connections)
Connection Method: Serial to PC
Speed 19.2
Flow: Auto
Under Network:
Made up a new name
(Mochasoft says to use UUNET, I created my own, see above comment)
Details: PPP, Idle Timeout: Power Off, pri/sec DNS: Blank, IP: Automatic
(just like MochaSoft tells you too)
and my connection is whatever name I created for the Serial to PC
btw: Make sure have your baud rate at 19.2 and you stop HotSync (since
you're using the same cable/Commport to run HotSync).
If you use NT and want to use RAS (and not use the Mocha's program) then you
follow the instructions below at this site:
http://xorand_designs.home.att.net/pilot_and_nt_ras.htm
So far I've had no problems with the program.
I hope this has been of some help to you and others.

Win2k may not correctly share or recognize the serial port, or won't share
it, with other devices.
my guess, if your PC box has a usb port, get a USB to serial gender
changer. They are available, and should work with your palm cradle. btw,
the added bonus, if you configure it correctly will be MUCH faster data
transfer rates, then a serial connection.
btw, DCC or Direct Cable Connect is for sharing resources between PC's that
are defined as "shared" through
windows, either win95, or win98, via a null modem cable, with serial or
parallel ends.
I hope this helps.

Don't know about the DCC connection, but I found a couple of programs to
allow IP access from the Palm while in the cradle connected to a PC on
the Lan.
You should try MochaPPP (MPPP). This works a treat, just have to
remember to exit HotSync Manager before starting MPPP.
There is another program called DirectPC, to allow a Palm in the cradle
to access a modem on the PC. I haven't used it yet, but sounds like a
good idea to me.
Both can be found at www.palmgear.com.

Or with a wingate/proxy/'serial modem' art ?
(this can be quite complex ! cf.
http://users.telekabel.nl/rodney/palmpilot/pppdcc/
)
