If you send mail to in...@palm.com, Palm Computing will send you everything
you've ever wanted to know about Graffiti. Also for demonstration
versions for Newton and Zoomer, check the ftp site:

Below is a quick overview:
Graffiti is a fast and accurate way to enter text into pen-based devices.
With Graffiti you can write with nearly 100% accuracy and about as fast as
you write on paper. The key is a clever alphabet that looks very similar
to the capitalized version you learned in first grade so it's easy to
learn. The alphabet is also designed to eliminate the natural ambiguities
in English that make handwriting recognition such a hard problem to solve.
If you write the letters as pre-scribed, you're guaranteed to get 100%
accuracy. Most users can learn the alphabet in 15-20 minutes and get
proficient within a few hours.
Graffiti runs on the Tandy Zoomer, Casio Z-7000, AST GRIDPAD 2390, Apple
MessagePad, Sharp ExpertPad, Motorola Marco, and (soon) the Sony Magic
Link and Motorola Envoy.
To order Graffiti call: 800 881-PALM (7256). Graffiti retails for $79 +
S&H.

: When you open Graffiti, a little box pops up. You write, one letter at a
: time, into this box. Some people love it, others absolutely hate it.
: You must write each letter directly on top of the last one you wrote.
: That's why most people who hate it hate it. But it gets nearly 100%
: recognition. Thats why most people who like it like it.
Actually, it replaces the built in HWR, from what I've seen. You DON'T
need to write in the box. Although that is apparently the only place to
put the special shift characters like punctuation, etc. But anyhow, you
are actually not confined to the little box.

David, you are correct, you don't have to write in the box. Also,
the shift chars do NOT have to be written in the box, you can
precede a punctuation mark by a special slash that tells Graffiti
to expect a shift char next. It works very well (I have Graffiti).
And, Larry wrote that you "must" write each char on top of each
other. Since you're not confined to the box, that's not so.
I was surprised when Larry wrote that "some people hate it."
I love it (over the default HWR in the Zoomer), and from what
I've heard and read, the vast majority of people love it,
probably for the reason he said, it gives very good recognition.
(Obviously, nothing's 100%, but it seems that people overwhelmingly
think Graffiti is exceptional).

Actually, it depends on what system you use. Graffiti is available (or planned)
for a bunch of systems: Zoomer, Newton, Pen Windows, Magic Cap, etc.
On the Zoomer, it replaces the built-in HandWriting Recognition. You are not
limited to writing in the box and *all* characters are available. The
difference is that the tap action is replaced by a back-and-forth stroke from
the right (due to the fact that a tap is used to place the cursor). See the
last paragraph of page 23 of the Graffiti manual.
On the Newton (and maybe the other systems, too), you must write in the
Graffiti box -- and there is nothing wrong with that. I have Graffiti on my
Zoomer and it recognizes my writing as quickly as I can write it.
