Remember the old Star Trek computer game that
played on a small square grid, had long- and
short-range scanners, klingons, space stations,
etc? I first played it via acoustic modem on a
hardcopy terminal where every move required a new
printing of the grid (circa 1974).

The format would make it seem a natural for the
small Palm OS devices, yet I cannot find one on
palmgear.com. Does anybody know whether this
nostalgic software exists?

It is there at PalmGear at:

The names are changed to protect the inocient (author) from Paramount. ;)

Nostalgia, it ain't what it used to be. I remember typing a Trek
game into a Vic-20 from an old at the time Creative Computing magazine,
but I digress. This link will take you to one of them, a quick peek
at the zip and the source code looks readable:

Old date, but Basic is Basic, right? There is cbaspad, smallbasic, and hotpaw
basic that I know about, and probably more.

I once wrote a version of the Trek game for a HP41CV calculator with an
extended memory/function module. I got it all debugged and working great.
I then put in the little magnetic card to save the game and the calculator
crashed. :( It was all gone.

Look for Star Battle by Thomas Baker -- he basically rewrote it in GCC and
compiled it..

[story of lost HP41 trek game]

Damn. In 1980 I wrote a full screen Star Trek game for UNIX that had ASCII-
animated phasers and photon torpedoes. You could even launch torpedoes in
proximity mode, and run away, like they do in Voyager (only 20 years ahead
of the show :->). It had a mode that was more like the standard Trek so you
could play it on hardcopy terminals.

It shipped with one of the early 4BSD tapes, but I never kept a copy... and
none of the copies of that tape seem to have been saved. It's all lost now.

Hi,

I've tried finding Star Battle, but without success. Any suggestions?

Really? How did you try?

My first and last stop was at http://www.google.com. I plugged in the
search phrase "Star Battle Thomas Baker" and got back a couple of
hits.
