I've been a PalmPilot user for 15 years and depend highly on the
thing. But it's increasingly clear that its days are numbered. I
periodically have to acquire new Palm Vx devices on eBay (fortunately
they can be had pretty cheaply), but the Desktop software is also
increasingly flakey and requires me to maintain Tiger on one of my OSX
computers.

At the same time I am using an old "stupid" cellphone. So the
solution to both problems would seem to be a "smart phone". I I also
want to switch away from ATT - their service is lousy in my area.
But I need to decide on Android versus iPhone before I sign a new
contract, probably with Verizon.

So is iPhone or Android more likely to provide satisfactory
replacements for the Palm apps I use - basically the four built-in
ones (Datebook, Memo, Todo, Address).

Thanks.

FYI: Missing Sync from <http://markspace.com> can sync your Palm
OS devices on Mac OS X Lion.

I know this because I'm still looking for something as flexible as
Datebk. It could be out there, I just have not discovered it yet.

I think that *most* smart phones include your "four built-in"
applications. Talk to the local VZW store. See what they have.
Do you find all the features you need and/or want? If yes, go for it.
If not, see if one of Verizon's competitors can sell you what you need/want.

If the apps that you need/want are not included, talk to the manager
and see what may be available, at extra cost, from VZW or "Brand X"!
If the manager is "hungry" you may be able to negotiate pricing on
accessories!

If you have questions about a specific phone, there's a good chance
that someone you know has one. If no one does, why not.

People here will share their opinions if you ask and maybe if you DON'T
ask! ;-)

VZW offered me a Veteran's Discount if I showed my DD-214.

The Missing Sync for Palm OS product does not list the Vx as one of
the compatible devices. I submitted a customer support request to
ask if it will work.

Im still using a Zire 31. Since Windows is my development platform,
HotSync runs reliably on XP Pro.

Sadly, there are a number of devices that can only be backed up via
their phone network connection - a downer if you have lots of data and
an expensive data plan.

I prefer a USB or Wi-Fi connection to a host of my choice - more than
one when possible.

I don't have experience with Android, but here is my experience
transitioning from Palm (many years of data) to Apple iPod Touch.

One of my requirements is that I am NOT going to send my personal
calendar/contacts/todo/notes data through a distant server ("the cloud")
in order to sync with my desktop computer. I am certainly not going to
store my data in the cloud, either.

I am able to sync (and back up) my data using only my devices in my
home. Unfortunately, third party software vendors have to use WiFi to
sync with desktop. Apple does not offer a method for them to sync data
via USB. It is inconvenient. If you have 5 third party apps that sync
with your desktop computer, then you have to command each app to do its
WiFi sync function.

Clearly, the iPod Touch is *not* as good a PDA as a Palm Pilot. It is
the closest approximation that I could find. I had to use a third party
app for "To-Do," which surprised me. Apple's To-Do application was
non-existent a few years ago. Now it is merely lame. I miss Palm, but
no use crying over spilled milk. Breathe in, breathe out, move on.

David, if you could, does the iPod Touch provide Pilot-like
functionality that the iPhone does not ? I had thought to get a new
cellphone and a Palm Pilot replacement in one item (an iPhone), but it
sounds like you're suggesting maybe replacing the PP with iPod Touch,
still separate from cellphone. Thanks.

I am not aware of any functionality that an iPod Touch provides that an
iPhone does not also provide.

There are many advantages to keeping an PDA separate from a cell phone,
such as
(*) when one breaks, the other still works
(*) i can work on one while the other is stuck to my ear

But as far as I am aware, "extra functionality" is not one of them.

Not at all. The iPhone does everything the iPod does, and more. If you
carry your Palm constantly, then an iPhone could replace both your phone
and your Palm, maybe.

On the other hand, I am not ready to start using a smartphone. I have
issues with privacy and security. I have to admit, every time Apple
announces a new model iPhone, I reconsider. I am staying with iPod for
now.
