Hi ALl,

Has anyone ordered the Visor Deluxe from Canada yet? I called the
number to order on the Handspring web page. the number was in
Toronto!! Heheh! But when I asked about the customs stuff, they were
unsure, so I backed out of it temporarily. Does anyone know what the
total would be and what I should expect for cross border stuff from
California?

Thanks for any information.

Traveller.

The key to buying from the USA is to ensure that the product(s) is/are
made in the USA. If they are, they are covered by the Free Trade Act and
thereby enter Canada without any duty. This is very important. If the
Visor is made offshore, duties will be assessed when it comes into Canada.

Depending on carrier, GST will be charged and you have to be aware of
courier costs. They are much cheaper within the US than cross-border. The
best and most cost-effective method of shipping is via USPS Air Express.
3-4 days and reasonable in cost.

In summary, ensure that the Visor is indeed manufactured in the USA, that
it says it somwhere, preferably on the shipping label. Then, be prepared
to specify the shipping method. (FedEX can charge up to five times the
post office rate and are faster and more efficient if you have the $$$)

Any thing I omitted> eel free to ask...

I doubt it. I bought software for $199 from a Seattle based company
(not Microsoft) and I had to pay a "brokerage fee" of $60 to the
courier company. This fee is to cover duty. So, NAFTA or no, they
still charge duty.

How can that be? The $60 you paid was a ripoff by the courier company, not
duty. There is no duty for technology products made in the USA. Next time,
ensure you specify the courier. I always ensure that my purchases are sent
to me via USPS Air Express. Often they come through without even a charge
at all even for GST (Cdn VAT); other times Canada Post has opened it and
assessed GST payable with a $5. fee.

I do a lot of cross-border trade.

The Visor in not made in the USA, but Malaysia. I think the majority of
consumer electronics are made outside the US.

Both my Palm V and Palm IIIx state on the back, "Made in USA"

I thought that I read that the Visor was also made in the USA? You sure?
