I am trying to set up a small network using novell 3.11 the objective
is to learn about NetWare, I have as yet however been unable to to install
it.
The error message I keep getting is as follows:-
There are no accessible disk drives, check to see that
the drives are properly attatched, turned on, and that the
correct disk drivers are loaded. Press ALT-ESC to switch
to the console screen if you need to load a disk driver.
<Press ESCAPE To Continue>
This message appears whenever I take any of the options from the
'Available Disk options' Menu. So I can't even start a low level format.
However between taking the option and getting the message the HDD LED flashes
so NetWare is doing something with the disk.
The drive works, in MSDOS 5.0 I can do what I like with it. I have
loaded ISADISK, (In desperation I have tried the other .DSK modules, but
they won't load). ISADISK has been tried using the /l & /b options, one at
a time and together. I have also tried it using both supported I/O port
values, 1F0 and 170, It will only load using 1F0. I have tried all the
supported interrupt number values E, B, F and C, it suggests E which ties in
with the IRQ reported for the fixed disk using Microsoft's MSD.
The intended server is an IBM compatible 386DX25 with 8MB of memory,
(a bit old but I have not previously had any problems with it). The hard
disk is a Seagate ST1102A giving 89.1 MB capacity.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to proceed I would be most
grateful. Thankyou for reading.

If you can use the disk under DOS, then your controller card is probably set
to the default settings. Therefore you should use the standard IO and interrupt
settings, which you are doing since the disk light flashes. One possible gotcha-
IDE disks sometimes don't work correctly with the ISADISK driver. I don't know
if the ST1102A is IDE or not. If it is, try using the IDE.DSK driver. If you
have an older copy of NetWare it might not include this driver and you'll
need to get it from CompuServe (GO NETWIRE) or one of the ftp sites like
ftp.novell.com or netlab2.usu.edu.

The other possibility is that you haven't left any room on the disk for
NetWare. If you have your DOS partition set to the full 90mb available, then
there's no place to put a NetWare partition. You should repartition your
disk with a 5-10mb DOS partition, enough to boot DOS and NetWare and load the
necessary disk driver. Leave the rest of the disk empty so INSTALL can create
a NetWare partition.
Good luck!
