What's the current status of 4.2 on VMware, Parallels, qemu,
VirtualBox, etc.? Is it worth digging out my 4.2 CDs the next time I'm
near them?

Hi David,
I'd suggest you check out the Emulation/Virtualization sub forum on
www.nextcomputers.org. There's several threads in regards to this. I
have several "Virtual" NeXT systems running under Parallels, VMware
Fusion/Workstation, Virtual Box & QEMU. It all depends on your needs and
what you're using for your HOST. Under Mac OSX, I primarily use Parallels
as it has faster screen response. It's lacking sound however. If you use
VMware Fusion, everything thing works 100% once you have the proper
drivers installed. My particular laptop is Quad-Boot. I also run
OpenSolaris. While I'm running that, I use QEMU. Everything works once
you get QEMU patched & then run the proper drivers. It works great. I
know you can use Virtual Box as well. I just updated to 1.6.4 under
OpenSolaris & it runs great. I still need to convert my QEMU images over
to VirtualBox & test them. I'm curious how well sound works under it.
It's spotty under QEMU sometimes. I have different screenshots of my
"Virtual" NeXT systems on my site in the screenshots directory. Hope that
helps. Take care!

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. These new-fangled web forums aren't
typically my first port of call. :)

Thanks for the subsequent info!

Just my $0.02, I have them running under MS VirtualPC2004, also as a
diskless client too.

Hi David,
I miss the all the activity here in the groups myself. :-) But the
forums on www.nextcomputers.org is active & you'll find quite a few
regulars from the newsgroups on there as well. Let us know how everything
turns out. Take care

Hi Henry,
How's the speed under VirtualPC? I gave it a shot under Mac OSX, and
it just crawled. That was NEXTSTEP 3.3 even. So, I never pursued it.
I've been happy w/ Parallels for Mac OSX & QEMU for OpenSolaris. Take
care.

Hi Steven,

disk access is a pain in the...., but this was something I remember
somehow similar to VMWare. If I have some luck, I can put video numbers
beside from Benchpress.

YUP, found it. I had a virtual machine on a HP Laptop with a Pentium M
1600MHz running NextStep 3.3 on it. The Animate Tensor Logo scored
7217.59 (ie. 72 times of a Color Station). Compared to my P4 3.4GHz with
a MATROX G450 -> 2914,65 it is more than 2 times faster, the Text
Manipulation gave a factor of 3.8. That is completely frustrating what
can be achieved with graphic acceleration, not supported on a bar bone
NextStep machine. Image Composting was even more, 3.4GHz P4 had 719
compared to the virtual machine with 3290 on Pentium M 1.6GHz.

As mentioned some numbers for disk access. I used Drive Performance that
scored an index of 4.02 on the virtual machine against 55.42 on the
Intel NeXT, and 70.71 on the OpenStep machine (the same running OS) The
drawback of the virtual machines is really disk access, because NeXT as
Open-Step has a poor file system. As said, I think VMWare was not even
better. My cause for running the stuff on VirtualPC (which is in the
meantime for free from MS) was also support of sound. VMWare always
lacked sound. Anyway, I in general have NeXT-Compatible Hw, so I have no
need for running any virtual machine. I just used this for tiny add ons
under Windows as a diskless client (only 3MB virtual machine).

I have never heard about "The Animate Tensor Logo". Is this some kind of
a benchmark? (links...)

Yeah, disk access is quite a bit slower than a real system. But, it works
good enough on an x86 system running linux/solaris/mac osx. :-) Even
running OPENSTEP 4.2 under QEMU on Solaris x86 provides a usable system.
The laptop I have for work is only a 1.6Ghz w/ 2 gig of ram.

That's suprising that VirtualPC performed so well there!

I always agree real hardware is better. ;-) I still run all 4 platforms,
but it's nice having a "Virtual" system while traveling and they're
extremely easy to backup/copy to another system. Have you tried the
latest versions of VMWare Fusion/Workstaion? With all the proper drivers,
everything works 100% including sound. Your StreamingRadio even rocks
while running it. I use it all the time. Take care.
