Wow =) I've never seen a user development group that is monitored/posted
to by members of the company whose products are being developed for =)
(gasp long sentence)
I've decided to start developing for the Newton. I love the Newton =)
The language I'm most comfortable with is C (ANSI C). I have zero
experience with OO languages, except for Visual BASIC's half-baked
not-really-OO (ugh!). So, I've decided that NewtonScript would be the
best place to start --
NS BASIC is too... BASIC, and I notice that in lots of the example code
I see for NS BASIC, people end up using a lot of embedded NewtonScript
to get the job done.
My current dilemna is this:
NTK or NewtDevEnv? (Don't say both. I'm short on $.)
- Is it really much easier to do things in NTK than in Newt?
- Does NTK have a visual "form designer?" Does Newt?
- Do either NTK or Newt come with documentation suited to a user with
zero knowledge of NewtonScript? Or do I have to buy a book either way?
If so, which book?
- Will NTK/Mac run on the Executor Mac Emulator for Linux?
- Will NTK/Windows run on Win3.1? How about Linux's WINE?
- *IS the extra price of NTK worth it?*
Thanks for anything in advance =) Please cc: moni...@concentric.net
when replying, as I'm not a news person. (until recently...)

I'll just try to answer a few of the Newt-related questions.
>- Is it really much easier to do things in NTK than in Newt?
depends on what you mean by "much easier". many things are easier in NTK
due to virtue of having a larger screen, keyboard, more memory, etc. if
you've got a large app with lots of resources, probably easier to develop
in NTK. certain things are easier in Newt since it's an incremental
development environment; you can try things out immediately in the actual
runtime environment. and of course, it's much easier to use Newt if you're
on a train or plane.
>- Does NTK have a visual "form designer?" Does Newt?
for a form designer/layout editor, you can use WinNewt on Windows or
VisualNewt -- both can work in conjunction with Newt.
>- Do either NTK or Newt come with documentation suited to a user with
>zero knowledge of NewtonScript? Or do I have to buy a book either way?
>If so, which book?
there are only the McKeehan&Rhodes books for NewtonScript, I think.
the Newt docs plus the NTK docs (for reference) are enough for some users,
if you can look at and experiment with the many examples.
>- *IS the extra price of NTK worth it?*
it can be/probably is, depending on your app. be sure to factor in NTK
support costs (~$250+ per year if you'd like to get early access to docs
and newsletters; more if you want to be able to get answers to questions,
aside from newsgroups)
