info send an email to: <TAPP...@applelink.apple.com>.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Newton 2.0 operating system received top honors at the
Comdex/Fall '95 trade show held Las Vegas, Nevada. Newton 2.0 won "Best
of COMDEX" in the "Operating System" category.

INSIDE NSG: John Tang, Product Designer, Apple Newton Products Group
answers the following question: "What is the role of the Product
Designer?" In summary, this position is responsible for making sure all
the mechanical and physical issues that are associated not only with
Newton hardware but also accessories are worked out between all the
different groups that make up the Apple Newton Products Group. The key
underlying issue for Product Designers is to strike a balance between
"satisfying the user and those that satisfy the business end."

MARKETING FRONT: Korey McCormack, Newton Product Marketing answers the
following questions:

- What is the Apple MessagePad 120 Upgrade Program?
- Who Can Upgrade?
- What is Included?
- How Does it Work?

VENDOR SPLENDOR1: FieldWorker Products offers a data collection program
called FieldWorker and a Global Positioning System (GPS) API for Newton
developers. FieldWorker allows someone using a PDA to collect data in
the field, match it automatically with location information taken from a
Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, and later export that data to
a desktop computer. For more info contact call: 416.483.3485, or FAX at:
416.483.7069, or email at: <field...@fieldworker.com>, or via the Web

VENDOR SPLENDOR2: Wright Strategies develops and markets tools and
services that allow programmers and non-programmers to create solutions
for field force automation utilizing PDA technology. On the tools side,
Wright Strategies has FormLogic -- a suite of applications that
facilitate the development, deployment, and integration of field force
automation applications. On the services side, Wright Strategies has
recently announced "Project Jumpstart", with the objective of providing
SIs, VARs, and corporate development programmers with all the requisite
components to "fast track" field force automation projects. For more

Estimating, and ClinPen -- a home health care application.

Comments from the Editor
------------------------

** THE WINNERS **

So who won the Newton programming books? Well ...

- Kerry Hughes <kerry...@dow.com> picked up Programming
for the Newton (Part 1)
- Brian O'Mahony <b...@eirenet.net> was lucky to get Wireless
Programming for the Newton (Part 2)
- Patrick Walker <pdwa...@life.uams.edu> won BASIC for the
Newton

And we also were running a special give-a-way in NewtNews Pro during
Nov95. The key though was that you had to give NewtNews Pro a very
close read to see that we were having a random drawing for a 2MB RAM
card. The lucky reader was: Rich Harover <Do...@aol.com>.

Congrats to all the winners, and thanks to everyone who participated!!
Hopefully we will continue to find cool Newton stuff to give away in the
future.

** NOW SYNC 2.0 UPGRADE PRICE DOES NOT SEEM FAIR **

I think that Now Synchronize 2.0 combined with Now Up-To-Date 3.5 and
Contact 3.5 is a very important solution to Newton/Desktop
connectivity. And I think that as a complete "new" purchase it is worth
the price. But I do not think that as a 1.0 beta tester that I should
have to fork over another $20 for the upgrade. I think the upgrade
should be free to registered users.

Version 1.0 was very buggy and did not integrate very well with the
Newton and the desktop software. While the features in Sync 2.0 might be
worth $20, I can't help but feel like I am not appreciated for being a
Sync 1.0 beta tester. In my opinion, Now could benefit immensely by
creating some good will and offer current Sync 1.0 users a free upgrade.
As a happy Sync user I am more likely to recommend this complete
solution to another Newton user than as an unhappy one.

** GETTING THE NEWTON MESSAGE TO THE MASSES? **

In an email discussion with Mark Heringer recently, we were trying to
come up with some ideas on how to get quality Newton information to the
masses. Mark and myself are extremely impressed with the new
functionality and vitality the new Newton 2.0 operating system offers.
But we know from personal experience that PDAs in general have taken a
huge beating in the mainstream and industry press.

So, we know that PDAs and the Newton are cool, but how do we get this
information out to the general public? I personally think that NewtNews
is doing a good job just by doing this newsletter, having the WWW pages,
and producing NewtNews Pro by Dave Hina. The main problem with
NewtNews Pro is that it is geared for the Newton novice or potential PDA
user, but it is only distributed via online services which isn't where
the target audience is at. It would be great if there was some way we
could get printed copies distributed to the Newton specific stores,
Newton vendors, and even generic computer stores.

NewtNews has some ideas in the works to try and make this happen, but I
know from past experience the NewtNews readership is full of very good
ideas. So, I ask you: "How can we get more quality Newton information
out to the target audience."

If your first thought is: "That is Apple's job." Then please remember
this part of the NewtNews FAQ: "NewtNews is my contribution to the
Newton community. If a revolution and then an eventual evolution is
going to take place, everyone must make some sort of contribution."

This edition of NewtNews was written with the help of: spending
extremely quality time with family and friends over the Holidays, the
Charger's getting into and out of the playoffs, watching my new Star
War's videos, and finally getting the Christmas music CDs out of the
stereo system.
