** SHORT STUFF **
Microsoft it appears has taken the 18 month hold off the "WinPad"
project and restarted it under the codename "Pegasus." Some core
features will include: kernal uses Win32 API, support for wireless
comms, and access to the Internet. The first betas are expected by the
end of 1996. Software and hardware developers are supposedly pretty
gunshy considering all the hype that WinPad would ship in 1993 but
nothing became of the project. [Mark Moore, page 8]
The flash memory market is going to be heating up in the future with two
camps getting ready to do battle. The CompactFlash Association is made
up with: Apple, Polaroid, Motorola, Matsushita, Eastman Kodak, Seiko
Epson, LG Semicon, Seagate, SanDisk, Cannon, Ricoh, NEC, 3M, and HP. And
the Intel Flash Translation Layer (MiniFlash) has: Intel, Fujitsu,
Philips NV, AMD, Microsoft, Compaq, and Toshiba in their camp. [Lisa
DiCarlo, page 14]
Ericsson will be using GEOS version 3.0 in some of their future cellular
phones that will be available in early 1997. Nokia is also working with
Geoworks to introduce a "smart phone" to be demoed at the Hannover,
Germany's CeBIT in Mar96. Version 3.0 will support TCP/IP, SLIP/PPP,
and universal mailbox for voice, fax, email, and pager messages. [Mark

Spencer F. Katt's Rumor Central thinks that one of the first things that
Apple's new CEO Gil Amelio will sell off is the Newton, followed by

Dan Farber in his Outlook 2001 column reviews some of the cool

** BATTELLE'S TOP TEN TECHNOLOGIES **
Researchers at Battelle Memorial Institute, the world's largest
nonprofit research lab, got together to brainstorm and rank the top 10
technologies that will have the largest impact on our future. They are:
1) Human genome mapping, which could lead to genetically targeted
diagnostic techniques; 2) Super materials, specifically matrix
materials, where manufactured fibers of carbon, glass, silicon carbide
or some high-strength metal are embedded in a flowable ceramic or metal,
and molecular composites, which are formed, molecule by molecule into
whatever shape is desired ; 3) Compact, long-lasting and highly portable
energy sources, such as fuel cells; 4) Digital high definition
television; 5) Miniaturization of electronics, which, among other uses,
will be key in developing intelligent transportation systems; 6)
Integration of power, sensors and controls, for "smart" manufacturing;
7) Antiaging technologies that address illnesses and deterioration
associated with age; 8) Precisely targeted medical treatments, using
hormones, growth factors or proteins to carry a drug to a specific organ
for treatment; 9) Hybrid fuel systems for vehicles, combining an
internal combustion engine with an engine that runs on compressed
natural gas, electricity or some other fuel; and 10) Edutainment, which
ultimately will provide a three-dimensional environment for learning,
using computerized simulation. (Omni Winter 96 p42)
** FLASHY NEW FILM **
The Advanced Photo System, brain child of five big-name photo companies,
will debut April 22, offering consumers "the biggest thing to happen in
our business since the one-hour minilab," according to a Wolf Photo VP.
The new system includes a magnetic coating that allows the film, camera
and photofinishing equipment to share information, maximizing the chance
that your best shots will develop into perfect pictures. As the camera
shutter fires, magnetic strips on the film's edge record information on
the lighting conditions, f-stop and shutter speed. A new generation of
smart photofinishing equipment then reads that information,
automatically compensating for less-than-perfect conditions. And for
reprints, you can refer to an index print that shows every frame -- no
more scrutinizing negatives on a light table. (Business Week 5 Feb 96
p46)
** PEOPLE DON'T LIKE WHAT THEY DON'T KNOW **
Suppose you've decided that a computerized reception system will
significantly improve the management of your organization's flow of
information, but are told that surveys of your customers indicate that
they would not welcome the proposed changes. Customer-service software
executive Thomas O. Jones thinks the problem is a no-brainer: develop
and install the new reception system. "When customers are asked for
feedback on a proposed change that is hard to picture, managers should
not put too much stake in their responses." Heeding your customers is
critical, but you also need to heed your own good judgment. You can't
take a myopic approach to listening to customers. "Customers are good
at saying how they feel -- but not how they would act in a situation
they have never experienced." (Thomas O. Jones, in: "The Quality
Improvement Customers Didn't Want," Harvard Business Review Jan/Feb 96
p20)

** NEWTONMAIL ADD-ONS **
Will Duckworth <duc...@hlthsrc.com> would like the following Newton Mail
Add-Ons for both Newton 1.3 and 2.0:
FILTERS: Yes every major email reader has them and I'd like Newton Mail to
have them as well. Something along the lines of 'If [Subject, To, From]
contains the following text [Input Line] then store the message in folder
[My Folder List, with an additional option to delete the message]'.
HEADER STRIPPING: Strip those pesky Internet headers before Newton Mail
saves the message to Notepad. I'd really like them stripped before it ever
make it to my In Box, better yet give me the option to either strip or keep
them.
MESSAGE REBUILDING: A lot of my incoming mail gets hacked into smaller
chunks making it harder to read. I'd like an option to dump messages to
the Notepad and reconstruct them into a single message. Newton Mail
does give each message a unique number [Test (1), Test (2)] so putting
them back together on the Notepad shouldn't be that hard.
** PAGING ALARMS **
Drew Thoeni <Dr...@eworld.com> would like to use his Newton based alarms
to send messages to his pager when he is not able to take his Newton
with him when he leaves his desk.
Snail Mail

** WIRELESS GROWING PAINS **
Things appear to be just coming together for building the wireless
solution, but expect greater delays in getting prototypes built, and
more than the usual snags when deploying a new technology. Key things
to look for: are all the software tools available, can the wireless
service provider actual deliver connectivity, and try as best as
possible to ride the coattails of other wireless projects.
Andrew Seybold mentions in the article that the market will not be
legitimate until "Microsoft and Intel" are actively playing a role in
building solutions. [Jill Gambon, Information Week, 29Jan96, page 43-44]
** HOW WIRED IS TOP MANAGEMENT? **
The following information is from a survey by Inc magazine which asked
500 CEOs from their "fastest growing private companies" who work 12 hour
days about their computer and technology usage.
Number of hours spent on the computer daily?
- 44%: 2 to 5 hours
- 22%: less than 2 hours
- 17%: more than 5 hours
- 12%: 0 hours
- 5%: no answer
Number of times daily CEOs check voice mail when they're away from the
office?
- 47%: 2 to 4 times
- 32%: 0 to 1 times
- 10%: 5 to 9 times
- 8%: no answer
- 3%: more than 10 times
Number of times daily CEO log into their computer network when they're
out?
- 56%: 0 (zero)
- 32%: 1 to 3
- 12%: no answer
Another interesting tidbit was that only 3% thought that information
technology was their greatest strength. [Inc, Feb96, p. 108]

** PDA **
International Data Corporation (IDC) is reporting that 'personal
communicators' or 'smart phones' are expected to be shipping 6.2 million
units by 1999. The key for the market will be -- does the solution
actually "improve productivity away from the office."
DEC is showing off samples of their SA-110 StrongARM microprocessor that
has "performance of a supercomputer with power dissipation low enough to
run on AA batteries." Potential solutions include better handwriting
recognition and true speech recognition.
** APPLE **
Former National Semiconductor Chairman Gilbert Amelio is now firmly in
charge of Apple as CEO and President of the Board of Directors. And one
of the first things he did, was break with Apple tradition of not
commenting on rumors, by completely dismissing the continuing rumors
that Apple is on the selling block or is in the process of trying to
sell off some of their core technologies. Above all Amelio stressed
that Apple plans to "remain independent" but will continue to find
partners to work together with. And Amelio did hint that earnings for
Q2 are expected to be down also.
Apple will be having an Apple QuickTime Live! Webcast of the 38th annual
Grammy Awards on the Internet.
Component Integration Laboratories' OpenDoc has won the InfoWorld's
Landmark Technology Award for 1995. OpenDoc is the multi-platform
software architecture which enables the development of component
software.
Reuters reports that even Bill Gates thinks that Apple "can still
recover from its losses and tumbling market share."
** MACINTOSH **
Apple has announce reductions in price by 11% on certain Macintosh
Performa models, and also has a new 'cpu + printer' purchase rebate
program.
Apple is actively supporting a project with the Open Software Foundation
to enable Linux, a freely distributed version of Unix, to run on PowerPC
Macintoshes.
** MOTOROLA **
Motorola and Cellnet plan to expand the mobile analog network in
Scotland.
Motorola will have samples in Jun96 of their latest fast static RAM
memory devices (the MPC27T416 and MPC27T415 cache tag RAMs) for Level 2
cache solutions in PowerPC microprocessor applications. Production will
start in Jul96.
Motorola has a new line of ruggedized mobile radio modems called MRM 660
modems. They are going to be available in US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific
and are marketed towards the transportation industry.
Motorola is also busy getting started in supplying and installing a
multi-million dollar digital GSM network in Cote d'Ivoire, Africa.
** OTHER **
Prodigy Services Company plans to market in the NY area a $1 an hour
Internet access, and will include Netscape Navigator 2.0 as a "standard
feature."
AOL reports that they are continuing to work with German prosecutors to
insure that German AOL users can not get access to neo-Nazi propaganda
on the Internet. AOL's big worry is being charge in Germany for
"inciting racial hatred."
CompuServe and Magee Enterprises have created a new "smart agent
software" system called Rosebud that provides support for alphanumeric
paging devices.
AOL membership has increased nearly "ten-fold" to 5 million in just
under two years, making it one of the world's "leading Internet
providers."
CompuServe's Internet Division has launched a $19.95 unlimited hours
pricing plan for Internet service called SPRYNET.

Comments from the Editor
------------------------
** INTEGRATION WITH WIRELESS COMMS **
As we go to press it appears that MegaHertz is now shipping their
AllPoints Wireless PC Card for RAM Mobile. This device will enable
Newton 2.0 wireless solutions similar in functionality to the Motorola
Marco.
Speaking of the Marco, what is up with it?!? No news is probably bad
news for the Marco product line, but word on the street is that Motorola
and the Newton System Group (NSG) are working together to build a cell
phone that has Newton functionality. Considering that other cellular
phone manufacturers are working with General Magic and Geoworks, it only
makes sense that a Newton cellular phone is in the works.
Not to be outdone by Palm's Pilot, I think that a two-way pager size
Newton should also be a top priority. I have found lately that a
smaller Newton would enhance its usefulness when I am out and about on
the weekends. The goal of such a small device would be to keep me
posted on late breaking information, and to retrieve simple information
like phone numbers and To-Do lists.
