For the past few weeks I have been trying to upgrade my MP100 with
system version 1.11 to system version 1.3.
I have tried versions mp414313 and mp415333 and an mp100.pkg file dated
11/11/94 (which includes a pckgemvr.pkg for installation).
Some updates seem to install ok but have no effect, others just don't
work or say I need to install an earlier v1.3 first....
I'm using the newton connection kit for windows (with the 1.11 udate
installed), I have windows95 on the desktop.
All recent docs tell me I need v1.3.x before I can install v1.3.y but
not one mentions what to do when you have a v1.11 MP100.
Can anyone give me a pointer to an v1.11->1.3 upgrade installable with
the newton installer or connectin kit for ms-windows?
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Michael

As I understand it, you need a hardware upgrade. Furthermore, I
understand that Apple is no longer offering this upgrade.

If someone sold you your Newton by referring to it as a MessagePad 100,
get your money back. You have the second ROM revision of the first
MessagePad, now usually called the Original MessagePad or OMP. System
1.11 is the latest update you can run. The 1.3 system is a different ROM,
introduced with the MessagePad 110 and made available as a hardware
upgrade for a while, and a version of this updated OMP was offered as the
MessagePad 100. You can't get this upgrade any more.

Michael:
I just bought an OMP for $50. I have also the same configuration that
you have (ver 1.11, newton connection kit for windows, Windows 95).
I tried to do the upgrade until I found that I have an Original Message
Pad and the only way to upgrade to 1.3 is getting a hardware upgrade
wich is not available thru Apple anymore.
I think we will have to stick to our classic.
Enjoy it.

You can still get an original Apple set of ROM's - that is if you order
them through SHARPS - I got a set, but I had to come up with a seri-
ously proff technician who could perform the actual switch, as the
company don't do them anymore - the soldering-gear needed
for the operation operates on hot air, and the circuits are grounded
during the entire session, due to their sensitivity to static elec-
tricity.......
The result was, that I was upgraded from ver. 1.05 directly to ver.
1.3 - and thus enabled to benefit from for instance Eudora f. Newton
- I love it....!!!!
I actually got a SHARPS Expertpad mod. 7000, but when I had the
replacement mask-ROM they were stamped APPLE, and talking
to one of the local technicians I was told, that theese chips were
actually purchased from APPLE's own stock of replacement
mask-ROM's - ipso facto they are identical to the ones used in
MP 100, and you can safely use them. But do yourselves the
favor of getting a true pro - experienced in this type of work - to
make the conversion, a common soldering-iron WON'T do the
job, and as theese chips are becomming increesingly scarce, one
has better get it right the first time around......

Niels
