Help: Solid Snake MG2 - can't get past the swamp

I can't get past the swamp. I can go right across to where the kid is
standing on the corner, and the last inch just doesn't work.

Anyone know how to do it?

Take the bottom path, then you have to follow a route like this (from memory):
