I have a 3-day old iMac G4 running OS 10.2.3 and iPhoto 1.1.1.
When importing photos from my Canon Powershot S300 camera, I have gotten
the following message several times:
" 'Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they
may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid
data)"
There is then a list window where the skipped files presumably are
supposed to be listed, but no names appear. On occasion it skips half
the files on the camera, other times just one or two. If I then delete
the imported photos and re-download, it sometimes works fine, other
times not.
I have never had any problem downloading images using the Canon
ImageBrowser software- only with iPhoto.
Anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks!

I've had this happen with imports using Image Capture and Canon
Powershot S110 Digital Elph Ixus V (pick a name already, Canon!).
This seemed to occur just before or just as the battery low indicator
appeared in the LCD. Trying again after a quick recharge resulted in
error-free imports. Other solution is to get a Flash card reader. Lots
faster transfers, drag and drop.

Nice try, but that's crap. iPhoto was leaving 100+ Nikon jpgs on the
CF card saying it couldn't read them. That *is* something to worry
about.
Fortunately I can (and did) just copy them off using the Finder, but
it is/was enough of a reason for me to stop using iPhoto. Well, that
and it is just too slow.

"So, it _is_ a monster!" "Hey, just a little one."

Hmmm- just got to wondering. Does it make a difference whether you're
plugged into a USB port on the back of the iMac or if you're using the
USB port on the keyboard? I've been using the one on the keyboard since
it's so convenient.

There are currently a lot of discussions going on regarding Iphoto and crash
on import, unrecognizable files, and other such problems, unfortunately. Some
people are helped by trashing preferences, some by backing up their photo
libaries and deleting and re-installing Iphoto, then re-importing their
images. There is also talk of Toast causing these or some conflicts. I am
currently suffering from these problems, and haven't gotten beyond trying the
preferences solution (which didn't help). I haven't yet tried deleting Iphoto
and/or Toast.

I'm also having the same problems using iphoto. When I import from my
digital camera (Canon Powershot G2), iphoto has no problems. However, when I
save a jpg file from Internet Explorer or Netscape, the file saves properly,
but iphoto refuses to import any at all. I tried using ACDSee and a number
of other shareware image viewer programs and they all worked fine and read
all my jpg files. So the problem has got to be with iphoto.
I tried all the posted fixes, including deleting Toast. After I deleted and
re-installed Iphoto, I was able to get Iphoto to import images from my digial
camera without crashing. However, when I started to try to re-import all the
old images that I had in Iphoto before, Iphoto went back to it's old routine
of crashing on import. Sigh... I haven't had the heart to try again. Anyone
know of a good way to use the crash logs to figure out why it is crashing so
much?
