I'm trying to find a graphic viewer for Macs which is similar in
nature to Irfanview for Wind Dose, and will run on 10.6 and earlier. I
remember there were several progs back in the day, but I don't
remember what they were. Any suggestions?

Moogs! Would you buy it for a quarter?

preview, included with mac os, can read many formats and make basic
adjustments.

to just view it, select the image and tap the space bar.

I don't know Irfanview.

"Back in the day", GraphicConverter was *the* thing besides the OS provided
Preview.

I'm still using Graphic Converter V4.4 on a beige G3 with OS8.6, it
copes with most photographic formats, even those that weren't around
when OS8.6 was current. For everyday use, either PhotoDeluxe or
Photoshop LE (both were freebies) do most of what I need.

Thanks to all who replied. I knew about Preview, but it's just not
what I wanted. What I needed to remember was GraphicConverter. It's
been a long time since I was a serious Mac user, so thanks much for
jogging my memory. There were lots of commercial progs that worked
well, but this is for a friend who doesn't have a lot of money to
spend, so shareware/freeware is the way to go, and GraphicConverter
was the best of the lot, IIRC.

It depends on what you actually want to do. GraphicConverter is great,
but costs money. GIMP is free, but perhaps not as good (nor as
'Mac-like').

GC can open and display almost any graphics format file. GIMP couldn't. So, yes,
it costs money but it's a fair price.

I think you will find that earlier (OS8 - 9) versions of Graphic
Converter are now free; just e-mail the developer and ask.

The older versions are available free, as you said, but you don't even
have to ask. If you download it from lemkesoft.de, there's a license
key for that version right there on the download page.

Even better. It's been a long time since I downloaded my copy and
either I had forgotten or things have changed since then.

Did that work for you or are you still trying to find a version?

Thanks for asking. I passed it on to the friend who has the Mac in
question, but I haven't gotten any feedback from him yet as to how
well it works. I'll pass it on if/when he gives me any feedback.
