Unison crashes 8-10 times a day for me now. Always with an error
indicated as Exception: SIGSERV and exception type of SEGV_MAPERR.

Any ideas of how to make it go away?

slrn?

Sorry, being a pain in the ass attempting to be funny. Since Unison is
no longer supported by its developer, there may not be much hope here.

I find the older version of Unison (1.8.1) to be less buggy than V2.
You might give that a try... it isn't all that different.

And it's easier to read, as well...

It's 2.1.10 that I'm using as 2.2 is too buggy. Still, I've been using
2.1.10 since it came out with no difficulties...

This is likely a memory usage problem.

> Any ideas of how to make it go away?

You could try deleting the cache files (assuming there are some,
I don't know). And perhaps catching up (marking all articles as
seen) all the newsgroups, as those data can become quite large.

I find 1.8.1 is more stable, and the message list is much easier to
read, since you can increase the font size.

Later versions restrict you to one font size.

Thanks, I've start fiddling with the magic of cache cleaning. I think
such programs could be called "who knows--it might help", but probably
not much marketing punch that way.

Thanks for the input, I have onyx malingering somewhere on my system
because of loyalist's statements. But while going through other
miseries I recently got Yosemite Cache Cleaner which seems vast in
scope. Vast enough to then avoid using it. I just gave it a shot and
we'll see what happens.

Just to clarify--you're using Unison 2.1.10 with OS 10.10.4 (beta), right?

Got the wrong link twice! I tried to correct it.

I didn't know 10.10.4 was released yet. In any case I've never managed
to make Unison 2.2 work without crashing. Perhaps it was/is also cache
or cache-borrowing related.

1. Reinstall it. Do you have the .dmg?

Use "AppCleaner" to remove it. It finds associated files and nukes
them.

Make a screen shot of your favourite groups first ...

2. Clear the cache (~/Library/Caches/Unison[ 2])

3. There is no "Preferences" folder for Unison that I can find.

No. I have a zip of the application. I don't think it came with a .dmg.

I don't have that one, but may consider it if my current approach doesn't hold.

By "clear" do you mean, delete this file?

My current approach was to do a "light" cache cleaning via Yosemite
Cache Cleaner. As part of the process, it restarts the computer. Last
week I restarted the computer, with no cache cleaning, and it seemed to
be helpful for a few days. This time too, it has stopped crashing
incessantly, but it was only 22 hours ago. Since I've never had these
kinds of problems before, the idea of a cache cleaning seems like it
might be helpful.

I've deleted the following in this order, run the program a few times,
producing crashes and then moved on:

1) subdir: ~/Library/Caches/Unison 2/

2) subdir: ~/Library/Caches/com.panic.Unison2/

3) files: ~/Library/Preferences/com.panic.Unison2.plist cousins

There were 3 or 4 files like the one above except they have random
letters after plist (e.g. ".eZr9xl" and the like), including one with a
lockfile extension. Killed all of them.

4) ~/Library/Preferences/com.panic.Unison2.plist

That's where I am now. I have yet to start meddling with this one or
its contents:

5) ~/Library/Application Support/com.panic.Unison2/

No issue with 5. I just erased everything and cleared the trash.
Re-started with no issues.

Repeat the entire process without re-starting the app between steps.

Re-install the s/w if you can.

(I just did all of them. Didn't lose the settings or the group list
either ... can't find where they're buried offhand).

Current Status:

Deleted the following in this order:

1) ~/Library/Caches/Unison 2/

2) ~/Library/Caches/com.panic.Unison2/

3) ~/Library/Preferences/com.panic.Unison2.plist cousins

There are also 3 or 4 files like the one above except they have random
letters after plist, including one named ...plist.lockfile.

4) ~/Library/Preferences/com.panic.Unison2.plist

4a) Just found this one:
~/Library/Application Support/Unison_2
~/Library/Application Support/Unison (roadrunner)

5) ~/Library/Application Support/com.panic.Unison2/
Went in here and deleted all .db files. Restarted Unison2 and
hand-entered my preferred 4-5 newsgroups.

Additionally I went to a year-old back up via Time-Machine and go the
version of Unison2 that I used then.

The program continues to operate this way: I run it, it crashes and
spits out a display of the crash-guts. Then I run the program again,
it gives me an option so send an email to the developer, I hit escape,
enter the program and things run fine throughout the session.

The next time I attempt to run the program, it dies anew.

I note that when I run the program all my preferences for server, font
size, etc, including probably 150 different "rules" (including flags,
killfiles, etc.) remain in place. I do have so much filtering/ruling,
I'm wondering if the nit isn't in there somewhere. Unfortunately I've
not been able to figure out where they are kept, nor server settings
either.

I have a 2.1 serial and that's the Unison version I'm trying to get
going again: 2.1.10. I've used it successfully since it came out. I
gave 2.2 another try just two weeks ago after discussions here. It
crashed, I removed it and put 2.1.10 back in place. Now 2.1.10 crashes
*every other* time that I start it.

I assume I've developed some corruption in some resource or other. I
have an email into Panic in the hopes that they can give me a full list
of where Unison hides its resources.

I just got word from Panic that the above files are their total
resource locations, though I've yet to verify that nothing is actually
stored within the app itself.

Still the most notable info provided was this: "the one missing part is
after deleting them all you’ll need to restart your Mac afterwards. The
more recent versions of OS X have been aggressively caching this type
of data."

In all attemptes to use 2.2 I simply swapped out the program and ran
it. Maybe it would have been wiser to swap, reboot and then run 2.2.

For *whatever reason*, at this point I'm running 2.2, have re-entered
my favorite usegroups, reloaded all headers and then marked them all as
read and it seems stable. Wonder of wonders--I'd never gotten 2.2 to
work properly.

Just a few weeks ago I was asking about caches and TWICE since then it
seems caches have been the source of some kind of issue.

So things went okay with 2.2 for a while, but every time I went from
one newsgroup to the next I would watch the little whirligig at the
bottom of the display spin and wait 2-8 seconds while it assesed things
and then displayed the 4 new messages. 2.1 never acted that way.

Then it began the same crashing with the same error: SIGSERV and
exception type of SEGV_MAPERR.

Note that all my killfile "rules", my server info, my personalities, et
al had remained with 2.2. So now I initated a new version of 2.1 and
found that here, inexplicably, they were all gone. Fine; better to
start clean.

Everything works as always 2.1, it's not slow between newsgroups.
Eventually I started putting in my killfiles again, whittling them down
from hundreds to scores. Then 2.1 began crashing. I turned off the
newly added killfiles. So far--no crashing.

This week's conclusion: There is something about the "rules" entries
that have issues. Note that I hand re-entered the various rules, none
of them particularly complex. So it's not like it's a modified
file--wherever the hell it may reside, which I still haven't figured
out, nor did Panic's cserv crew tell me.

Yes--turn off all of your "rules" (filters, killfiles), or delete them.
The memory crashes will go away.

How you can begin to use "rules" again, I can't say.

Here's how you can get rules to work without it crashing: Get Yosemite
Cache Cleaner, run the "Deep Cleaning" option including "Clean System
Cache".
