Anyone know whether a December 2008 superdrive
will fit in a July 2012 Macbook Pro?

I assume by "December 2008 SuperDrive" you mean Apple's external optical
drive, originally called the MacBook Air SuperDrive, now the Apple USB
SuperDrive?
iFixit offers a replacement optical drive mechanism that fits in all Mid
2009 and later 13-inch and 15-inch Unibody MacBook Pros (without retina
display), but they say it isn't compatible with the Late 2008 15-inch
model, nor the Early 2009 or Mid 2009 17-inch model.
Judging from the iFixit replacement instructions, the optical drive
mechanism inside the Superdrive looks like the one in the Unibody
MacBook Pro, but they may have subtle differences like physical
dimensions and mounting holes.
Without direct experience, I wouldn't want to jump to assumptions about
compatibility, given that iFixit thinks the similar looking drive in the
Late 2008 15-inch MacBook Pro is not the same as the one in newer
models, and that OWC sells another similar looking drive which they say
is only compatible with pre-Unibody MacBook Pro models.

I'm sure not, since a 2009 optical doesn't.

No, I meant the one that came in the Macbook Pro (MBP) built that month,
which I was thinking of buying dirt cheap, but which can't handle the
amount of RAM in my 2012 MBP. My current MBP's drive worked
intermittently for a while and finally refused to eject a CD because it
thought there was none there (even though the motor to suck it in worked).
But I'm paying a little more and getting one the same age as mine.

Thanks. If the drive won't fit, I'll check them out.
I decided to go ahead and buy it, as it has other parts worth the price.

Not sure whether I said that right. The older one was cheaper, but I
but the newer one which is almost the same age as the one with the bad
drive.
