My computer is running very slow tonight.

Activity Monitor tells me in the "network tab" that

kernel task has sent 676 MB and received 1.76 GB.

Out of curiosity, what sort of network exchanges does kernel task do?

Is this generic IO reqested by other processes and thus of no concern,
or would these number indicate that kernel task itself initiates those
IOs, and if so, what for ?

Does it constantly talk to apple and has received 1.76GB of updates
under the cover (outside of the App Store application). ?

Yep.

Try choosing View > All Processes, Hierarchically from the Activity
Monitor menu bar some time.

Nope. Pure FUD.
