To make things (perhaps) more complicated, both the macs are running
on a windows active directory domain network - if that would prove to
be an issue.
At the moment we are having to use the scanner locally and share the
files to the other machine via a common network file share. This is
not ideal though as it will always cause the person on the local
machine to stop working when something needs scanning.
I looked under the Sharing options screen under System Preferences,
enabled printer sharing but there didnt seem to be any mention of
scanners/input devices, same as trying to install a new device on the
remote machine. I can find the add printer option but nothing for
generic input devices.
Any pointers?
Cheers.
Yep. The scanner sharing feature is controlled from an app that many
people don't even notice is there. Look for Image Capture in your
/Applications folder and you should find sharing controls in its prefs.

In 10.5. The OP is using 10.4, which is as I described.
G
I just share my scanner between my Mac and PeeCee with a simple USB
4 way switch. It's a mechanical switch, so it supports USB 2.0.
Cheers you guys it almost works perfectly.
Just a couple of issues:
1) In Image capture, the 'scan' button is greyed out. We can do a
preview fine, but not actually scan and save the image.
2) They have to manually add the scanner through image capture every
time they log onto the mac. Any way to make it a permanent feature?
I've sorted number 1 with a little help fro google. Just needed to
drag a box around the area i wanted to scan on the preview picture..
Any ideas how to get it automatically attach to the device on launch?
