Hello.

I used to use Android File Transfer v1.0 app in the previous/old MacBook
Pro's Mac OS X v10.10.5/Yosemite, I migrated its data to a newer MacBook
Pro's mac OS Sierra v10.12. However, this app doesn't work anymore since
it doesn't see the connected Samsung Galaxy S6 edge device with its USB
cable. I even tried redownloading and copying its app over, but it was
still old (dated 2012!) and not working.

It still works fine on the old MacBook Pro though! Am I missing
something? If it is broken and unsupported in the newer mac OS version,
then what is a good free replacement so I can use its USB cable (no
network and Internet to transfer files please)?

Thank you in advance. :)

Where'd you download it? According to the web site the current Mac version
is 1.2:

does the Mac see the Galaxy? Sytem Information -> USB

No. :( Why does it work on the old MBP, and not the new one? I tried
both USB ports! New MBP's shows it not connected. I noticed its System
Information's USB is different from old MBP's. With nothing externally
connected for USB ports, it only shows USB 3.0 and its "Apple Internal
Keyboard and / Trackpad" and "Bluetooth USB Host Controller". Old MBP
show more than those.

Argh! Do newer MBPs (mid-2015; 11,4) and Mac OS X v10.12/Sierra have an
USB and CMOS configuration/blocker setting or something like IBM PCs?

Maybe I need to clean install instead?

I use a third party app to update calendars on the mobile devices.

I am pretty sure I never used Keys before. I did try Samsung Smart
Switch, but that didn't work either. I just wanted to transfer media
files.

I don't use that. Hmm. I wonder what is the problem. Argh.

I did some more testings. I also tried Samsung's Smart Switch that
installed a driver, but that didn't work either.

It doesn't seem to be app related since mac OS X/Sierra v10.12 can't see
the connected device according to its System Report's USB details. I
compared before and after connecting as shown:
http://pastebin.com/raw/kKr6W93M ...

I tried to connect old, updated iPhone 4S and iPod nano 6G with the old
school USB cable and no problems. Is there a special driver I need to
get for Samsung Galaxy S6 edge (from Germany)?

I am still puzzled why the old MBP and its Mac OS X v10.10.5/Yosemite
has no problems. :( Thank you in advance. :)

Have you verified that the cable is working by using it somewhere else?

OK, this is getting weird now. A few times, but I can't always reproduce
it. mac OS Sierra/v10.12's System Report's USB shows a card reader, but
this Samsung Galaxy S6 edge doesn't have a card reader slot that I could
find. Here are the copied and pasted texts:
http://pastebin.com/raw/ZX75tKvc ... However, it says Apple's and not
Samsung. Hmm, is this new 15" MBP defected, confused, a bug, or
something else?

https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/57t9g2/new_mbps_mac_os_sierra_v1012_doesnt_seem_my_usb/d8wag6c
suggested I run kextstat command so I did it in both normal and safe
mode (still had the same missing Samsung Galaxy S6 edge USB connection
problem): http://pastebin.com/raw/iQGRRzSt ... I didn't see anything
unusual. I hope those drivers are correct for Mac OS X v10.12/Sierra. :/

Everyone has no problems connecting their Samsung Galaxy S6 edge to
connect to their Macs' Mac OS X v10.12/Sierra with the USB cables? Or is
it just me?

Apple support told me to check Samsung and look for drivers, but I don't
see any. I read that Mac OS don't need drivers to connect to Samsung
Galaxy S6 edges? I don't remember installing any drivers on the old Mac.

Also, this smartphone's model number is SM-G925F. According to Samsung's
web site support. it is not from USA. Maybe region blocked? Is that the
problem? If so, then why did it work on my old English MBP and its Mac
OS X v10.10.5/Yosemite?

Ha. My employer gave me this SIMless Samsung Galaxy S6 edge to test. I
do have a SIMless iPhone 6. :)

I decided to upgrade the old 15" early 2013 MBP's Mac OS X
v10.10.5/Yosemite to mac OS Sierra/v10.12 since I needed to return it
soon. Since my new 15" MBP replacement mostly works, I might as well try
to reproduce it on the working old one. After upgrading and rebooting, I
logged back into my usual administrator account. I USB connected my
work's SIMless Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and retried. It worked perfectly!
I checked mac OS' System Information's USB details and saw it listed:
http://i.imgur.com/mmcfkYJ.png

I wonder why the new 15" mid-2015 MBP doesn't connect to it. Here is its
System Information with the connected, but missing Samsung Galaxy S6
edge: http://i.imgur.com/iDRDnIt.png ... :(

It looks like Apple changed its USB setups like removing USB2 in its 15"
MBP (Retina) between early 2013 and mid-2015 models in terms of USB? I
wonder if the new MBP's USB hardware is defected or something. Are there
software USB testers?

More likely that later system versions simplified the way the USB device
tree is displayed in System Information.

I have multiple saved profiles for my Late 2013 15-inch MacBook Pro that
I made while running OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and OS
X 10.11 (El Capitan). The same computer shows multiple USB 3.0 Hi-speed
and Superspeed buses in the Mavericks and Yosemite profiles, but only a
single USB 3.0 bus in the El Capitan profile.

Another point is that the Mid 2012 and Early 2013 MacBook Pro models had
USB 3.0 ports plus a separate internal-only USB 2.0 bus for some
peripherals (e.g. the FaceTime camera), which showed up as a separate
bus in System Information (at least, in Yosemite or earlier).

The USB 3.0 ports in 2012 and later models are compatible with USB 2.0
and USB 1.1 peripherals.

> I wonder if the new MBP's USB hardware is defected or something.

If other external USB 2.0 peripherals (or USB 3.0 peripherals reporting
a maximum speed of 480 Mb/s) are working, I'd suspect driver
compatibility issues specific to the OS version and/or Samsung.

> Are there software USB testers?

Apple had a developer tool called USB Prober but the last version I
spotted dates back to 2012 and Xcode 4.3, so it may be unreliable in
recent OS X versions.

Now, where is this driver at? From what I read, Mac users don't need to
download and install it? I already tried redownloading and reinstalling
Android File Transfer (hasn't been updated since 2012 though) and
Samsung's Smart Switch. None of them helped and worked. :(

You said your company provides these devices to you for your work
purposes. If so, your company's IT/support representatives should be
able to tell you exactly what is needed to use the device with your
computer.

So far, nothing. I did find out something new:

I found out this SIMless Samsung Galaxy S6 edge is global and not with a
US carrier. According to my former boss who got me this Android
smartphone to test with, it was probably ordered online like Amazon from
Germany. That explains why its default language is in German and
Samsung's technical support says to contact a non-US company.

I wonder if Apple region blocked it? If so, then how the early 2013 MBP
worked fine? Did Apple make it region blocked in its mid-2015 MBPs?

if it's sim-less it's not with any carrier

that just means it's intended for germany.

if it's unlocked, it should work here but it's possible that it might
not.

IT couldn't help since it was an unsupported device since it was
purchased from the department for testing purposes. I installed a clean
mac OS Sierra v10.12 into an external USB3 HDD and then retested it.
Same problems. Now, I am thinking this new MBP's USB hardwares are
defected or something. :(

OK, my computer friend figured it out earlier. It was the white USB
cable that came with this Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. Its micro-USB male
plug had a missing pin #4 as shown in

... We tried his Android phone and it also failed. We tried a new longer
cable from Monoprice, and it worked. He analyzed the micro-USB male
plugs to compare both cables.

It is so weird that the new MBP (mid-2015) would reject this cable! :/

Good to hear you have located the problem, but...

There is not supposed to be anything connected to pin 4 in a USB micro-B
male plug on any cable, therefore the missing pin doesn't matter.

That ID pin is only connected in a USB on-to-go cable (USB micro-A to
USB micro-B), and then only at the micro-A end of the cable (where it is
grounded).

The Monoprice cable may have a pin 4 in the micro-B plug but it can't
have anything connected to it, or it will not be USB compliant.

Clearly your Samsung's cable is at fault, but it must be some other
problem, not the missing pin 4 in the USB Micro-B connector. Whatever it
was, it prevented a Mac with a newer revision of USB hardware from
establishing a conection with the device.

As the cable works with older computers, I suspect something subtle like
the cable was slightly out of tolerance, but close enough that the older
computer happened to work while the newer computer did not.
