Hi,

I've got a file called 'Mac OS X 10.2 6C48.dmg.exe' downloaded from a
peer-to-peer system. Is it the upgrade for OS 10.2? At about 80MB it
can't be the whole of OS 10 can it?

Thanks,

..matthew

Surely not. And with an extension .exe? Yuk!

I would not go near it :-0

The extension, I expect, is so that the peer-to-peer network (Kazaa)
classifies it as software and not media, textual or data - it is certainly
not a valid executable on a PC.

So 'Mac OS X 10.2 6C48.dmg' at about 80MB does not sound like the valid
upgrade to 10.2?

Thanks,

I suspect it is some developer seed release. It might be risky to install it,
especially if on a computer you use for serious business.

No. See if it unstuffs. Sometimes Stuffit will expand an
exe if it's not a self-extracting archive. Don't use it,
but find out what it is so you can warn others about it.

Thanks again Paolo.

I'm not sure what a 'seed release' is? Could it be an early release of some
'random' bit of software for OS 10.2?

Cheers,

Ok. Is there a 'stuffit' for the PC? (It is not a PC self-ectracting archive.)

It might have been at one time, but it's extremely unlikely that this is
the case any longer. Mac OS X 10.2.6 is build 6L60, so a release tagged
as 6C48 is almost certainly out of date and older than updates available
to anyone directly from Apple.

That's a little harsh. :-) It's more like, "OK, all you developers who
want your software to actually WORK with the new release when it comes
out, here's our latest attempt at it in advance of the general release,
and good luck with your compatibility testing."

Yes, but use Winzip for self-extracting archives (exe extension).

It's a self-extracting archive (which will only run on a PC)
of a beta-test upgrade to OS X 10.2. I wouldn't go near it
with a whip and a pistol.
