Hi!

I have a Mac SE/30 with a 8/40 configuration. I wonder what might be the
optimal system for this mac? I currently have 7.5.3 installed, but it takes
20Mb of my harddrive which is a little too much......

I would appreciate recommendations on what might be the best system to run.

6.0.7? Will not work with MacTCP I guess...
7.0.1 or 7.1 ? Which one is the best version of these two?

Another question is why "Macintosh SE/30" doesn't show up when I choose
"about" in Finder on 7.5.3? When I do this with some of my IIcx it will
show up like "Macintosh IIcx". Any ideas?

Sincerly Yours

Ulric

Hi,

I am using 7.1 on a MacII and I find that it is solid (including MacTCP).
I have a larger drive (100Mb) but 8Mb of RAM also.

I have an SE/30 and I use 7.5.5. Rather than downgrade your system, why
don't you upgrade your hard drive? I did (I now have 340MB fast HD), it is
not so difficult to do, and it is worth it. A moderately larger HD is very
inexpensive, and you'll get the benefits of the latest system software.
BTW, 7.5.5 is last system update that will work on the SE/30.

6.0.8 is the latest version and rather nice. Don't know about MacTCP
though.

7.1 - but it costs money unlike 7.0.1 (get the tuneup!) and you should
get the free System Update 3.0 as well. If you hunt through the
archives and get the Thread Manager (TurboGopher 2.0.2 comes with
version 2.1 which is more modern than the most recent version from Apple
-2.0.1), the Drag and Drop stuff, ApplMenu, BeHierarchic, and a few
other bits that escape me, you'll find the System and 7.1's Finder
almost as nice as 7.5's.

FWIW, when I upgraded my 475 from 7.1 to 7.6, I was amazed at the speed
increase; it could be that you'll find the Finder a bit sluggish if you
go back to 7.1. But then again, it wasn't slow when I turned off my
huge raft of extensions and control panels.

Have you considered trying to get an second-hand external HD? If you
can find an old small one it might be very cheap. I didn't have too
much trouble with lack of space on my 160MB internal drive until I got
7.6.

Not me, but you might like to ask the Classic Macs mailing list:

Someone there will probably be able to help you.

I say 7.0.1 with the tuner..works with FreePPP 2.01 and MacTCP too.
I did it on my old Mac Classic 4/40, worked great!

As long as you're at it, might as well drop in some more RAM. The later
versions of 7.5 can be real RAM intensive. And since the SE/30 can take 128
MEgs of RAM, I'd say go for it. But then, I enjoy spending lots of money on
old hardware :)

That's a pretty small hard drive these days... I also run a 8MB SE/30
(anyone have four 4MB 30-pin SIMMs for sale at a good price?). I can boot
up System 7.0.1 on an external hard drive; it is ready to go in under 30
seconds from when you switch on the power. I can also boot up System 7.5.5
on an external EZ-135 Syquest drive (which is faster than my hard drive!);
that one is ready to go in about two or three minutes.

I use RamDoubler in both configurations. Operations are definitely more
responsive in System 7.0.1. I only use System 7.5.5 for those programs
which require it.

If/when I upgrade to 20MB memory, I would probably use System 7.5.5 more.
However that fast startup time for System 7.0.1 is very nice!

I also have System 7.1 available on the internal drive, but that doesn't
see much use... it may be the best compromise between speed & stability
though.

Regards,

Richard

http://www.macsolutions.com/MSRAM.html (yes, the caps are necessary).
They've got 4meg 30-pin SIMMs for $23. But they have 16 Meh 30-pin for $85.
I say get 8 of those and run 128 megs of RAM :). BTW, you will nee MODE32
to read anything over 8 megs-- make sure you get the 7.5 version if you're
going to be using MacOS 7.5 or better.
