The upgrade broke USB printing on both PowerBook G4s I have. I'm using
an HP Photosmart 1215, which printed fine through 10.4.3 (and still
does on an older iBook G3 my Wife uses).

When I print, all I get is a message "Gimp-Print Printing page 1, 25%",
then another saying "GenericClass: waiting for device". That's all
it does on both 10.4.4 machines, which were printing fine on 10.4.3.

Is this a known introduced bug? It seems like a showstopper here.

Some people have reported problems printing with certain HP printers. I can
state that this is not a general problem, as all of the printers here and at
the office, including HP printers, work. However, none of the HP printers I
have access to are Photosmart 1215s.

It seems that the problem is confined to some machines, almost all of which
are HPs. This would make it HP's problem. (And that of those who have only HP
printers, of course.)

I can't speak to the HP Photosmart 1215, but my HP LaserJet 1012
functions as before.

Have you tried reselecting the printer through /Utilities/Printer
Setup Utility? And, failing that, have you tried Printer Setup Repair
to see is there is a fixable problem? If neither of those work, then
I'd check to see if there is a new driver at HP Website.

Good luck!

When printing stops working here, I find that if I:

ps cax | grep cups

get the pid and

sudo kill -HUP <pid>

things free up and start working again.

Not sure if this is what's happening with you, but I never wait for it to
time out.

Actually, I usually find printing either freeze or crashes when my printing
stops working.
