I'm just getting started (or, trying to) with IRC.
I've installed ircle (I'm running OS X 10.4). I tried to connect to a
server on the Dalnet network, and it told me I need to enable identd.
I spent most of a day trying to do so, with no luck.
Can anyone explain this to a newbie like me?

Thanks

Found via Der Google, this page has what you need.
Do a find on page for "identd", there are two useful entries.

http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/networks/connectprob.html

If necessary, download and compile the referenced pindentd.

Here is a man page for identd:

http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:3Vu3GtH6hbAJ:www.rt.com/man/identd.8.html+identd+unix&hl=en

It's a pretty useless thing to run, AFAICT. That implies it's a useless
IRC requirement for the server you are accessing.

Mostly, yes. But we use it on a "trusted" internal network so we know
who IRC users are.

Here's a pre-compiled identd that comes with a Mac installer and

How did you find that?

Hi,

ident requirement is a very useful thing in fact.

Its mainly against bots/worms/viruses/spammers and people not having
rights to IRC on that machine.

Ask IRC operator guys, they will give you more detail.

ps: For security, even the "lets panic" Steve Gibson doesn't say
anything against it. Its a very , very simple standard with very simple
serving.

Don't remember how I found it originally. I installed it a long time
ago and when I needed a URL for posting here, I just opened the
prefpane to find out the author's first name and searched on that.
