Years ago I had some utility, Apple or 3rd party, that showed the total
hours of use. I'm not sure if this was calculating the CPU or HD usage.

IIRC, this information was stored in the NVRAM on the logic board of
old Macs where utilities (like TechTool) were able to read it. Just
using software won't work. I don't know when exactly Apple pulled this
(maybe during the "NewWorld" transition) but I'm pretty sure this
hasn't been possible for quite a long time.
