For my departments teaching labs I use Filemaker Pro. It works great, easy
to set and use, and is not limited to just inventory (i.e. I also use it
for contacts, ordering information, etc.).
You should be able to get it for around $120 with educational discount.
Good Luck!

What next!?
There is a VERY nice chemical inventory program called CAMEO which was
developed by the National Saftey Councial (NSC) and some other organizations.
I have seen a demo of the software and it is is really nice (and really big,
16MB) in all I believe) but it contains a lot of useful chemical information
and other good stuff. I am not sure if this is too fancy for your needs. I
should mention that the software can cost around $1000 but there are
substainal discounts to govt agencies or schools. I think the cost dropped to
around $375. I should say that I came across this software though my
firefighting background because part of this software includes the
capabilities to store floor plans and city layouts for emergency response.
You can get a demo a Hypercard Demo of CAMEO and price info. I can probably
get the address in a few days so if your interested E-Mail me direct and I
will forward the info.
Cheers.

What kind of discount is that?! MacWarehouse is selling it for $99.
