I am trying to decide between Kaleidagraph and Sigmaplot. In the past
I've used Kaleidagraph and am quite familiar with it, but I've heard
Sigmaplot is better. It looks like Sigmaplot can do more than
Kaleidagraph (more powerful curve fitting, 3D graphs, and so on) but
as far as I can tell Kaleidagraph is originally a Mac program that is
just now being ported to Wintel, but Sigmaplot is originally a Wintel
program now available for the Mac.

So I'm wondering: are there things which Kaleidagraph can do much
better than Sigmgplot? Is the interface of one clearly superior to
the other?

In the immediate future, I'll probably be doing rather sophisticated
curve fits to small data sets (say a hundred data points) and will
want good graphs, but I don't want to outgrow whichever I buy.

If you are looking for a Mac scientific plotting and analysis
application, I strongly recommend Igor Pro from Wavemetrics. They are
just coming out with the latest version, 3.0.

I've tried SigmaPlot and Kaleidagraph on their original platforms. In a
nutshell, SigmaPlot felt like an elephant trying to dance. I found
Kaleidagraph clearly superior, much easier to use, and it gave me the
results I wanted much more quickly. However, DeltaGraph offers higher
quality graphing possibilities than Kaleidagraph, at the price of a
somewhat reduced ease of use, a few annoying features and greater hard
disk space consumption. I wouldn't recommend SigmaPlot for any serious
work, unless you have a lot of time on your hands.

Caveat: my evalutation is based on 1-2 year-old versions of the programs.

I have been using Kaleidagraph for years and I love it. One important
factor for me has been that Kaleidagraph has been responsive to user
suggestions and has added more and more features without turning into a
bloated monster like MS Excel. My only complaint with Kaleidagraph is
that the spreadsheet capabilities are weak. In general I do all of my
speadsheeting on Excel and then paste the data into Kaleidagraph for
plotting. The graphs I make in kaleidagraph have been suitable for my
publication purposes. I am looking forward to the next version of the
program, which I hope will come out soon.

I second this vote for Igor Pro. http://www.wavemetrics.com

I have bought SigmaPlot when it was first released for the Mac.
I have then received all the maintenance upgrades (v4.11, 4.12,..., 4.17)
and it is still VERY buggy. Moreover, JandelScientific has not come up
with anything new for at least a year. Don't waste your money on
that software. I have now switched to DeltaGraph and I am very happy
with it.
