Metrowerks to Add Support for PersonalJavaô to CodeWarrior Releasing Beta
Version of CodeWarrior with Support for Java Technology Aimed at
Web-Enabled Consumer Devices
AUSTIN, Texas-December 7, 1999-Metrowerks, a Motorola company, today
announced its support for Sun Microsystems PersonalJavaô Application
Environment, a subset of the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) aimed at
Web-enabled consumer devices. Metrowerks will release a beta version of
CodeWarrior with support for the latest version of PersonalJava (v1.1.3)
later this month.
CodeWarrior with support for PersonalJava will allow Java developers to
quickly leverage their Java technology development skills to extend their
business into the networked device space.
"Both Java technology and consumer devices are high-focus platform areas
for us," said Luis Quiroga, product marketing manager, Metrowerks. "By
adding support for PersonalJava to CodeWarrior, we are providing the Java
developer community with the tools to extend Javas cross-platform
benefits to consumer devices."
With PersonalJava support, users will be able use the award-winning
CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE) to add valuable
content to any Web-connected consumer device that executes Personal Java
Virtual Machine and class libraries from a LAN or wireless network. This
includes devices such as set top boxes, high-end mobile handhelds and
PDAs, and Internet screen phones.
PersonalJava technology in CodeWarrior will also provide developers with
the ability to analyze, verify and debug their PersonalJava-based
application in an emulation environment before deploying it to a real
device.
"Ultimately, the success of any new device platform depends on the
support of the developer community," said Reza Nabavi, market development
manager, Sun Microsystems. "A powerful set of development tools, such as
those provided by Metrowerks CodeWarrior IDE, can greatly accelerate a
devices adoption in the market, which translates into increased sales for
device manufacturers. We look at our development tools vendors as
instrumental partners in proliferating our J2ME platform technologies,
such as PersonalJava, within the Internet appliances sphere."
Availability
PersonalJava, along with other J2ME technologies, will be available in a
new CodeWarrior product line hosted on Windows and Solaris in the first
half of 2000. A beta version of CodeWarrior with PersonalJava support
hosted on the Windows platform will be available later this month,
followed by a beta hosted on Solaris in late January.
