Hi,

does anybody know for which image types QuickTime supports transparency,
when using QuickTime graphics importers to draw them?

I know GIF does, but I don't want to throw even more money down UniSys' throat.

For PNG and TIF it apparently doesn't work. I suppose it works for
object-oriented PICTs, but I need something that can easily be created
using Photoshop, GraphicConverter and the likes.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

TGA format files allow for an alpha channel, which defines translucency.
Setting the alpha channel to 0 gets you transparency.

PNG and TIFF both support transparency (both as a file format, and
QuickTime's support of it).

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.

Do I have to do anything special to make this work? A while ago I was able
to create a PNG that worked in Netscape Navigator (or was it iCab?) but
refused to be transparent in one of my programs (which worked fine for
GIFs).

PNG is still a relatively new format, and as such many programs have
only partial implementations of it.

Yeah, it's just that my program used Quicktime to display this image, and
that essentially means I can't display transparent files with QT, except
GIFs so far :-(

I've done PNG with transparency (the alpha-channel kind - not ther key
color kind) through QT. The same goes for TIFF and PhotoShop.
