See the following, particularly the part about the clutch actuator:

This happened to our HP at work following a paper jam (that was corrected).
The HP website has detailed instructions for solving these sorts of problems.
The instructions take just a minute or so to implement and reset the printer.
Ours has been fine since.

Here are some instructions from the HP website. I know this isn't your exact
problem, as your carriage isn't stuck, but the bizarre procedure seems to
reset the printer. Couldn't hurt to try it.
H:P Deskjet 900C and Photosmart P1000, 1000, 1200 Series Printer - After
:a Paper Jam, the Resume Light Blinks and the Carriage is Stuck
:
:The carriage may stall on either the right or the left side of the
:printer. The resume light may be blinking. The following instructions
:will help to get the printer back in operating order.
:
:1. Lift the lid to the printer (cartridges are on the right side).
:
:2. Turn the printer off, then power it on again.
:
:3. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer when the
:grinding noise starts.
:
:4. Move the carriage towards the middle of the printer (this procedure
:may take a couple of tries to get the timing correct).
:
:5. Take out the cartridges and close the top cover.
:
:6. Reconnect the power cord. The power and the resume lights (green
:and red) should be on.
:
:7. Open the top cover, reinstall the cartridges, and close the top
:cover.
:
:8. The printer should print the alignment page (if it doesn’t, go to
:the Deskjet Utility and select “Test.” If test won’t end after
:printing, hit “command (apple key) - period.”
:
:9. Print from another application.
:
:If you get strange error messages about one of the cartridges, ignore
:them.
Thanks a bunch,
What do you know about Epson Stylus 3000 printers?

Nothing unfortunately. I think you'll have to start a new thread for that one!
