The Power and Resume lights are alternately blinking - saying the printer is
in an error state. Checked paper path and it is clear. Cartridges are good,
replaced both with no help. Any suggestions?

See the following, particularly the part about the clutch actuator:

This happened to our HP at work following a paper jam (that was corrected).
The HP website has detailed instructions for solving these sorts of problems.
The instructions take just a minute or so to implement and reset the printer.
Ours has been fine since.

Thanks for the information but it did not help. I checked the clutch actuator
as suggested but it was in the correct position and moves freely. When the
printer powers up the print head moves across the carriage rail with no
grinding noise but the both lights continue to blink alteranely. Paper is
never picked up if that means anything. I recieved the printer broke so I am
not familiar with the normal operation. Any other ideas, believe me they are
appreciated.

Here are some instructions from the HP website. I know this isn't your exact
problem, as your carriage isn't stuck, but the bizarre procedure seems to
reset the printer. Couldn't hurt to try it.

H:P Deskjet 900C and Photosmart P1000, 1000, 1200 Series Printer - After
:a Paper Jam, the Resume Light Blinks and the Carriage is Stuck
:
:The carriage may stall on either the right or the left side of the
:printer. The resume light may be blinking. The following instructions
:will help to get the printer back in operating order.
:
:1. Lift the lid to the printer (cartridges are on the right side).
:
:2. Turn the printer off, then power it on again.
:
:3. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer when the
:grinding noise starts.
:
:4. Move the carriage towards the middle of the printer (this procedure
:may take a couple of tries to get the timing correct).
:
:5. Take out the cartridges and close the top cover.
:
:6. Reconnect the power cord. The power and the resume lights (green
:and red) should be on.
:
:7. Open the top cover, reinstall the cartridges, and close the top
:cover.
:
:8. The printer should print the alignment page (if it doesn’t, go to
:the Deskjet Utility and select “Test.” If test won’t end after
:printing, hit “command (apple key) - period.”
:
:9. Print from another application.
:
:If you get strange error messages about one of the cartridges, ignore
:them.

Ok, tried that and no help the first 3 times. Then I tried it again at the
same time pressing the Actuator pawl to the left, trying to force it to grab
a page. Guess what, the printer is working . I printed the test page and
turned it off and on again with no lights blinking. Now I can put the case
back on and it should work like new, sure prints the test page as though it
was a new printer, nice and sharp.

Thanks a bunch,

What do you know about Epson Stylus 3000 printers?

Not exactly sure why, but printer is now working the way it was meant to when
it left the factory.
Betwen the suggestions from Bob H. and TNW7Z from comp.sys.mac.printing the
printer is working great.

Thanks a bunch

Nothing unfortunately. I think you'll have to start a new thread for that one!
