Hello. I used to work in a University Computer Lab with a HP Laserjet
4si. When the toner started running low, the message TONER LOW 1 would
appear on the display, but the printer continued to print. As lab
assistant, I would shake the toner cartridge and all would be fine for
another 100 pages. I would continue to watch the display and shake the
toner until I got TONER LOW 2 and finally TONER LOW 3, at which time I
would replace the empty toner cart.

Now I work for a publishing company in a room with a LaserJet 4si (and 5
PowerMacs). The difference here is that when the TONER LOW 1 message
comes on, the printer stops working, requiring attention. One of us has
to get up right away and shake the toner before we can print more.
What's more, after only two or three shakes the printer will not respond
to the shaken toner. Instead it displays TONER LOW 1 even after
shaking, refusing to print. At this point we are forced to replace the
cartridge even though I know that there are a few hundred pages left in
it.

Is this a preference that I can change? I would like to get a little
more life out of these toner carts, and I know from my previous
experience that it can be done. But how?

TONER LOW Message
If the 16 TONER LOW X (where X is a 1,2 or 3) message appears in the
display, the toner level in the toner cartridge is getting low. The print
becomes lighter and white streaks may soon begin to appear. The TONER LOW
message progresses from 1 to 2 and finally to 3.

The LOW TONER item in the Config Menu determines whether the printer
continues printing when 16 TONER LOW messaged appear. If LOW TONER=STOP*
is selected, printing stops at each message level until an operator
intervenes and changes tonor or presses the CONTINUE key. If LOW
TONER=CONT*, the 16 LOW TONER messages still appear, but the printing
continues. In either case, these messages remain active in the display
until the toner is redistributed or the cartridge is changed.

16 TONER LOW 1 - You should be able to print approximately 200 additional
pages before the 16 LOW TONER 2 message appears.

16 TONER LOW 2 - Print quality begins to degrade noticeably.
Approximately 200 additional pages print before the 16 TONER LOW 3 message
appears.

16 TONER LOW 3 - Any additional pages are likely to be illegible. Change
the toner cartridge.

This info is right from page 6-5 of th User's Reference Manual.
