When I print, the application titled with my printer name (currently HP
Photosmart D5360, via USB) opens. But there is no window. Nothing but a
fully-functional menu bar. I can use every command listed in the menus but
there is no window at all to show print jobs and status.
One of these menu commands is "Open Printer List", and if I choose this and
click on "Open Printer Queue" for the printer, I get the normal print queue
window, just as it's supposed to look.
The way I work around this problem regularly is to save the printer queue
icon in the Dock. When a print job starts and the windowless printer queue
opens, I quit this and click on the icon in the Dock which opens the proper
print queue window. I've been using this work-around for years but it's
getting tiring.
I almost never have problems printing (that is, I always get my output).
This problem has persisted over 2 Macs, many versions of OS X, at least 2
manufacturers of printers, and several models of printer.
I've deleted & reinstalled untold number of drivers, and OS versions.
Deleted preferences. No joy.
Repairing permissions doesn't help.
Resetting the printing system (option in Sys Prefs > Print & Fax) doesn't
help.
I Googled and found discussions regarding this issue and, for some, found
that clicking "Share this printer" and unchecking it in Sys Prefs > Print &
Fax fixed it. But not for me.
I know that Printer Therapy (formerly Printer Setup Repair) is supposed to
fix this, but if this app can fix it, I'm pretty sure I can too.
Any ideas how to fix this? What exactly does Printer Therapy does to fix it?

DaveC-
Most of the time I don't want to be bothered by having to see the print
Queue.
When I print anything from 10.5.6, the printer icon suddenly shows up in
the dock. By clicking on it, the print queue opens, allowing management
of any remaining jobs.
I wonder if your workaround would happen even if you forgot to save the
icon to the dock?
