Hi there,
I have a PB140 with a 40 M hard drive and 4 M memory,
running under system 7.0.1. I've also installed the system & tune up.
My problem is the following:
Whenever the disk is not used for a certain amount of time (adjustable
in the portable control panel) the disk stops spinning. When its needed
again it starts spinning again (of course). But at this stage my Mac hangs.
Depending on what I am doing i get a different error message:
If I'm using VersatermPro, I get Out of Memory ,
If I'm working in the finder the system just hangs, or sometimes, says
Unimplemented trap , or Bad F-line instruction.
Does anyone have a suggestion what to do ? I've
reinstalled the system completely, without any success.
It also seems that this does not happen when I boot from a disk.
But I never had this problem before, i.e. all the software I have worked
fine until now.

I possible e-mail me, I'll put all the answers together and post it.
Thanks Serge

Hi there,
A few weeks ago I repartitioned my 40 M HD on PB 140 to
gain the additional "free" 1.6 Megs. What a mistake.
After this, as soon as my HD went to sleep it could not wake up
again, without hanging the machine.
I then read, that other people had problems with repartitioned HD, so
undid my repartitioning, i.e. I selected maximum MacIntosh in the apple
HD Setup partition menu.
What apparently happens is that the hardware needs this 1.6 Megs
for some purpose (God and maybe apple know what). If this space is not
available, your likely to run into troubles.
So don't repartition your HD unless you really know what you
are doing.
Last but not least: a note to Apple:
You guys could have sent out a note explaining why there is this
mysterious 1.6 M unused HD space, and warn people from wasting
their time in repartitioning there HDs.

Hope this clarifies matters
Cheers Serge
