I'm running OS 10.6.8 on a 3.06mhz Intel Core 2 Duo imac. I have a
KonicaMinolta color laser printer connected with ethernet cable to a little
in-house network via the phone company dsl modem. The modem is always on. I
can print, no problems. My wife can print, no problems... as long as my
computer is awake. If my computer is asleep, or off, she cannot print as she
gets a message about the printer not being available or not online, even
though it is powered up and ready to go. Now, I suspect that her computer is
lookig for the printer and has to go through my computer to find the printer.
The printer is connected to the router/modem and not directly to my computer,
so I guess there is an address issue somewhere. I am not sure how to
recognize it if I see it, nor am I certain where to go to rectify the
problem. On my computer I have printer sharing on.

I suspect that in system preferences for print&fax the printer options &
supplies submenu has the printer name and location boxes - the location box
is empty. I do not know what location, if any, to put in that box.

Once again, I am in over my depth a bit, having gotten along okay in the
computer kiddie pool, with generous help from the lifesavers on this board.

It should be possible for my wife to select this printer and print from it
without my computer being on and awake. It would be The Apple Way, but I need
help finding the way. I suspect I may have to enter some appropriate data on
my wife's computer as well, likely on her preferences, but not sure. Thank
you.

...never mind. It just bothered me that I did not have the immediate answer.
A little search of the interweb reminded me how to install a new printer, and
the rest was The Apple Way. Thanks for your time, anyway.
