The screen resolution has mysteriously changed. It is set at 1680x1050
but the desktop and other windows are too large for my 21 inch iMac
running snow leopard. For example, the dock at the bottom and the task
bar at the top don't both fit the screen at the same time. I have to
move the cursor to reveal one or the other. It is not a hardware problem
because the resolution is OK when I boot from my back up drive. Any
suggestions? Thanks.

It sounds to me like you accidentally activated the Zoom feature. Check
in "System Preferences->Accessibility->Zoom" first of all. I forget what
the incantation is, but it's an easy fix.

I'm glad to see this question. I turned off all zoom options on my
computer now.

Thank you. That was the problem and I know how it happened. My
daughter who uses a windows machine was visiting and wanted to use the
computer. After she left I found that somehow she turned the zoom on!
Thanks again.
