Hi. I am searching for a utility software that would allow me to
modify the file type or creator of a Mac file. Any suggestion
please? Thanks in advance.

File Buddy is very nice for this sort of thing. You can find it at:

File Tweaker, MacChange, FileInfo FKEY are other possibilities. The FKEY
is the minimal means for changing type and creator and bundle and initted
check boxes. Especially useful if you have limited screen real estate and
don't want to have to bother hiding or WindowShading windows to get to
a file and do the drag-and-drop; the FKEY uses the standard file dialog,
from any setting, to locate the file you want to change. It doesn't do
batches, though; for that you would need something like FileTweaker. One
advantage of MacChange is that it comes with a pop-up list of some of the
more common type/creator pairs - and you can add to the list if you aren't
afraid of Resediting the program.

ResEdit. Official freeware by Apple, available on every info-mac
site and all of Apple's sites and probably 50 other places as well.
ResEdit is essential if you like hacking around with your Mac.

Get More Info is an extension that brings up a dialog to alter Type,Creator,
and file flags like visible/invisible. It uses 39k of system memory
according to Conflict Catcher and has worked fine on a IIci, Quadra 650,
and PPC 6100/66 that I have routinely worked on.

You invoke the extension by pressing command-I in the Finder on a
individual/group of files. The only drawback is that it doesn't have a
mechanism for batch changes of groups of files. It has to pop up its
dialog for each file. Its real handy for changing text files from format
to format.

Forgot to give location on Get More Info. It can be found at Info-Mac archives.

ACME Filters posted to Info-Mac within the last couple weeks. Freeware.

FileTyper and Snitch are both excellent for this task as well. I'm sure
both are available from Info-Mac.

My favorite is an extension called Snitch. It adds a lot of
configurability to the get info window of a file.

FileTyper 4.2.2 :

Might also want to check out "FileBuddy 3.4.2" :

To invoke GMI, you press command+option+I. Command+I will still work for
Finder's Get Info command.

And GMI _does_ do batch changes, at least for files of the same type and
creator. That's what the "All" button is for. (It changes to "vers" when
the option ket is pressed, allowing you to view and edit a file's version
resources.)

I prefer Snitch, an INIT that puts file type/creator code edit power in
your Get Info boxes. It's share and available.
