Hi!
I'm trying to install System 7.5.3 on a PowerBook 140 and on a Mac LC
(running System 7.1).
I backed up all I could, so both have at least 20 Mb free (the HD's aren't
very big!).
I've no CD-ROM.
(Q1) Is it possible to install the System from LocalTalk?
I downloaded the images of the full install to my MacIIcx.
I downloaded DiskCopy 6.3.3 too, but I can't create the floppy disks!
(Q2) how do I make the 20 (!!) floppy disks from the image files? (I
followed the instructions of DiskCopy 6.3.3, i.e. "press option key and drug
the image to the DiskCopy icon..." but the system hangs)
DiskCopy 6.0.x seems not to recognize the .smi and .part files!
(Q3) how can I install the new System? Ideas?
Many thanks in advance
Roby

Ciao!
(Q2) come faccio a creare i 20 dischetti dagli image files? (ho seguito le
istruzioni presenti con DiskCopy 6.3.3, ma il sistema si impalla).
DiskCopy 6.0.x non sembra riconoscere i files .smi e .part!
(Q3) come faccio ad installre il nuovo System? Idee?
Grazie in anticipo
Roby

Sounds like the PB 140 and the LC already have a version of the Mac OS
installed, and will run. If this is the case, you can use LocalTalk to
transfer the 7.5.3 installer disk images that you downloaded to each of
those computers, and then do the installation from the disk images on
each computer. I do not believe that you can have the disk images
resident on another computer and do the installation directly from that
other computer via LocalTalk, but you can transfer the images via localtalk.

You can do the same with the 7.5.5. updater, by the way, after you have
7.5.3 installed. I recommend doing this. The 7.5.5. updater is available
free for download from the Apple web site.

If you transfer all the disk images to the 140 you probably won't be able
to install from them unless you have tons of memory. You would need to
mount all the images on the desktop at the same time, and my guess is that
you would need uppards of 20 MB to do that Don't know the exact figure
below which it won't install.

I would open DC 6.3.3 and select "make a floppy" from one of the menus up
top (I forget which one, but you'll find it. Then you'll get an open
dialog box and you can navigate to your images. DC will tell you to insert
a floppy. Bingo, you have an install floppy.

Repeat 20 times, or until dinner is ready.

You should be able to install 7.5 without booting from a floppy. Just
start up the PB, make sure it's plugged in and won't run out of battery
power, and install slowly...or until breakfast is ready.

I'm not sure you really want to run 7.5 on the LC. It will be slow as a dog.

It doesn't take up that much memory to mount a disk image on the desktop
- disk copy doesn't load the whole image into RAM...

With 7.5.3 and many other apple installations, make a folder called "net
install" or something similar, and drag the disk images into that
folder. You should be able to install from that folder. I believe that
the readme file for 7.5.3 has instructions on how to do this. It's been
a while, but you may have to put the installer and script directly in
the "net install" folder.

So yes, it is possible to install it via local talk -- e non scrivo il
italiano buono, scusi.

Ciao,
Jeremy

Remember to update the driver before installing.
One thing I vividly recall about that particular Update is that the
Drive Set-Up folder folder was buried deep and out of sight in the Main
Folder and it slipped by many people, leading to problems trying to run
7.5.3 on the previous driver.
Forgetting to Update the Driver was such a chronic problem that when
OS8 came out Apple made Updating the Driver a default part of the
Installation process.
Always thought 7.5.3 was wonky (for the Power Mac anyway) ... but 7.5.5
came along quickly and that worked much better for me, both on a PM7500
and an old 68K machine.

Roberto,
7.5.3 will run dog-slow on those old Macs, so what I want to know is
"Why...?" If there's something in 7.5.3 you want/need, that isn't in
7.1, you may be able to add it without "upgrading" your System version.
Keep the speed and small RAM requirements of 7.1 if you can. I'd
suggest you look here http://macfaq.binhost.com/index.shtml for more info.
Ciao,
