I bought some songs that came in MP4, and I was
able to burn them to a CD fine. But I can't load
them into my MP3 player and play them. They're
supposedly "locked", but I have no idea why I
can put them on a CD, and play them fine from
my powerbook, but can't just play them on a player.
Are some new players supposed to be MP4 compatible
eventually? Or is it the locking mechanism that's
only honored by some devices?

once you have the CD, assuming it is a regular format, I think all you
need is reimport the songs in iTunes, and ask "convert selection to mp3"
in the "special" menu. If instead of "to mp3" you see something else
there, you just have to change the related setting in iTune prefs.

No, I don't have a CD -- I got these songs from iTunes. I wasn't aware
mp4 was a format that CDs came in. Also, am I correct in assuming
that mp4 differs from mp3 in that it is a bit more compact AND that
it incorporates new security features?

Well, why then writing "I was able to burn them to a CD fine" in your
initial post.
If you got your songs from Itunes you *can* burn a CD with them.
If you *don't* want to burn a CD, the only way to unprotect Apple's
format is called a hack at best. You may try a software called "JHymn"
to do so, but don't ask me how. All I know is, it's not simple. There is
also another complicated way which involves playing entierely each song
while using utilities such as Wiretap that will re-record the mac sound
to unprotected AIFF. I personally used it to transform some realplayer
courses into mp3, to get them on an iPod. It's long.

There is nothing difficult to 'JHymn'. Just work with a copy.

I'm suspecting the OP had burned a data back up, not an audio cd.

Does not seem to be a mac.app. ??

And are you proposing he buy a PC (real or Virtual) just to run it?

You burned a data CD, not an audio CD. Make sure the format in iTunes'
Burning preferences is set to Audio CD.

One idea is to burn to audio CD then rip it back into mp3 - you'll use
up a CDR but hey, these things cost about 20c each.

Be aware that this will degrade the quality of the music.
MP3 and M4P are both compressed formats that use "lossy" compression.
When you record an M4P to CD, it has already been compressed, and
degraded in quality, once. When you re-compress it using MP3, it is
compressed again. Like JPEG compression, MPE and M4P compression is
cumulative and irreversible.
