my father would like to hook up his G3 laptop to a cell phone. We looked
around at the stores and none sold phones with the software for Mac, only
PC. Will remote access run the phone?????????? Or where do we go to get
the software (or is there any) to run a cell phone from the laptop? He is
using 8.6.
TIA
Dave

To accomplish this you'll need a cellular phone and a compatible modem card.
I'm using a 3Com Megahertz 56k Cellular Modem PCMCIA card (model
3CCM556)
in my PowerBook G3, which works great with my Motorola MicroTAC/650e
cell
phone. The installation software installs a modem script to use the card
with Remote Access/Open Transport. I had to order a cable to connect the
card to the phone separately from Motorolla.
The card supports a variety of phones, including:
Motorola Phones:
MicroTAC
MicroTAC Lite
MicroTAC II
MicroTAC Digital
DPC-550, DPC-950
Contour
Piper
UltraLite
PT-500, PT-550, PT-650
TeleTAC 200
Elite
TX400 Attache and Carry Phone
2900 Attache and Carry Phone
StarTac 6000, 6500, 8000, 8500
Nokia Phones:
232
2120, 2160, 2180
Ericsson Phones:
AH200 and 300 Series
DH/DF 300 Series
DCC Series DH/Dhvi 318
DH368, DF388, PD 300 Series
Other Phones:
GE CT-500, CT-700, CT-800 Series
GE DH300 Series (excluding DH/Dhvi 318, 368, 388)
GE DT-3000
Pioneer PCC-700/720, PCC-900/920
JVC TNJ-7, TNJ-10
AT&T 3850
AT&T 6650
RadioShack 17-1062
Technophone PC515
Technophone TD815
Global Village also makes (or made) a PCMCIA card modem that supports a
very few cell phones:
Nokia 232 and 2120
Mitsubishi
Motorolla Microtac and Elite
If you already have a phone that's on the list, all you need is the card
and a cable. I bought the phone I use because it was on the list, and
ordered the 3Com Megahertz from MacMall. Again, I had to get the cable
separately from Motorolla, it's the same one used in PC applications.
Although it all works together fine, be aware that the best connection
to your service provider that you'll get using a cell phone is about
equivalent to the *worst* connection you'd get using a wired phone. My
wired connections are anywhere from four to ten times faster that my
wireless connections. I've used the combination successfully, however,
while camping or traveling, and when I'm on the road it does save me
a trip back to my hotel room or my office just to check my mail.

Did a similar connection with a PC and a Nokia 5 series phone. The
driver software comes with both Mac and PC. The best connection speed
you can hope for is 14.4 and usually 9.6 or lower. Not much good for
anything but e-mail. You need 75% signal strength or better or you get
dropped, and get with 3Com's tech support for configuring the settings.
Custom modem strings make all the difference. BTW, one 3Com tech person
was lousy, the second person I talked to was great.

You should check out:
<http://www.digicom.it/english/products/tables/home_pro.htm>
They have a variety of PCMIA cards for working with a variety of cell
phones. As well, I think there are some cell phones with 'built-in'
modems that you can directly communicate with via IR (if you've got a G3
Series or later).
Of course, I can't answer any questions because I:
1) don't have a cell phone
2) haven't tried to connect via a cell phone
3) haven't tried any of the products on the page
