Hardware deterioration

changed the USB cable and they went away. I had been using this cable
for several years, plugging and unplugging maybe once a month, and I
guess the connector was losing its tension. Is this normal? or might it
just have been an inadequate cable?

If your cable dated back to usb 1.1 and you are using it on a usb 2.0
connection, it could be heat from the data traveling much faster than
the cable was rated.

Oxidation on the connector (either the cable connector, or the USB
socket).
Flexing of the soft parts of the cable against the stiff parts of
the connector (bending coat hanger syndrome).
Dog ate my homework syndrome - pets (or vermin) chewing on the
cable (my brother had to get a new Time Capsule because of the
dog).
Over time I suppose humidity could have worked its way into the
cable. Wild speculation on my part as I do not have a clue about
this one.
