I managed to get rid of the 747 completely by replacing the crappy fan Apple
put in the power supply with a new one (brands are important, buy a Papst if
you can), and running it on 6V instead of the normal 12V. You could try and use
the original fan like that, I guess. The Mac does not get overheated at all (I
checked every two hours for about a week or so), probably because I do not have
any NuBus cards or whatever installed. Second trick was to cut out the metal
strips in front of the fan, as they create a lot of noisy turbulence.

I'm amazed Apple got away with this noisy power supply. Considering that the
original owner paid almost $10,000 for my beloved Mac II at the time (Apple's
European pricing), they could at least have tried to reach the noise level of
$900 PC clones...

Quadmation, Sunnyvale, CA, 408-733-5557

they have 150w replacement for cx/ci and 234w replacement for II, IIx, IIfx.

but unless you really need one (fail PS or underpower), I suggest you
to live with the noise. or stuff the computer in your drawer or
in the closet or something.
