Hi all!

I am trying to install a 2.1gig COMPAQ SCSI hard disk as the main internal
drive in a Performa 7100AV/66 computer. Whenever I boot from the OS CD rom
and run the disk setup, it says that there are no appropriate drives
detected. From what I can tell, the drive is set for ID0 and it terminated.
There are about a dozen different jumpers that I'm not used to seeing on a
drive, so I'm looking for some help in configuring it.

Marking on the drive are:
W3049D2.26
Compaq 142214-001
C2490A (not sure about this)

Can anyone provide some documentation on this drive, or any special
considerations I need to take in regards to the MAC?

Thanks!
SS

It's "Mac", not "MAC"... unless you're talking about a network card.

What version of the OS is on the CD-ROM?

Aha, a Macintosh wannabe.

The Macintosh Disk Setup program only works with Apple branded disk drives.

You will need to obtain a third party disk setup program such as FWB disk
setup program or Silverlining.

FWIW, the driver for the disk drive is stored in the first few blocks on the
disk drive by the setup program. The ROM's in the Macintosh know how to do a
SCSI inquiry and then a get for the first few blocks, which also pulls in
the partition information and then once this stuff is loaded in memory the
ROM's jump to the driver code to make the rest of the world come to life.

Yup! I do some network support and this bites us in the backside sometimes.

It's OS7 (7.5?)... I'll be trying an OS9 CD once my friend loans me his.

Thanks!

Well, I do have two older Macs... and I'd love a G4, if I could justify the
cost.

Ouch! I'll see what I can dig up then. I was trying using whats on the OS7
disk and will be trying an OS9 disk soon, just in case.

My problem is that I don't know what the Mac is expecting on the drive
jumperwise. Parity? Termination Power? There are MANY jumpered options on
the Compaq drive.

I was hoping the software would be able to write that info once the drive
was discovered. Ce la vie.

Thanks!

The C2490 drives series are OEMed hp drives known for their great noise
when getting a little older.
Have a look at www.hp.com for the jumper details
Probably www.pc-disk.de will help as well.
