I'm evaluating Performas and Quadras as a multimedia system
for my kids. What's the basic difference between the two?

Also, obviously there's a big difference between 25 MHz and
66 MHz machines, but for running games and kid's educational
software, are the extra dollars for the speed worth it?

Finally, if I buy a used low end Performa/Quadra, is it easy
and/or reasonably low cost to upgrade the CPU to a faster one?

I have email access only. Please respond directly to:

For the most part, Quadras have FPUs (the chip that speeds up math
functions drastically), while Performas don't. Otherwise, there is
usually no difference. The exceptions I remember off the top of my head
are: the Powermac Performas have FPUs, and Quadra 605s do not have FPUs.
Note that FPU upgrades for 68040 machines costs $250 on up.
FPUs are almost never used in games and educational software.

Well, guess what are the most powerhungry apps? Games tend to require a
faster machine than currently exists to be really good. (another Murphy's
law...)

In every instance that I have ever seen, it is cheaper to sell the old cpu
and buy a new one. The upgrades are often rather twitchy, to boot, and
you usually lack pieces of new technology.

The Quadra 630 (and its other-market counterparts) lack FPU's as well.

Wrong! The Quadra 630 has an FPU. I know because I own one and
snooper detects an FPU is installed. It also says it in the manual.

Wrong. The Quadra 630 has an FPU (that is, it has the full 68040). The
Performa and LC 630s have no FPUs (that is, they have the 68LC040).
