Anyway, I'm looking to buy a sound card for my Mac Centris 650. I'd like
something that will not only do 44khz 16 bit sound (preferably with 16 or
more channels), but also MIDI. I have looked at the ProAudio Spectrum 16,
and it looks like a pretty good card. If any of you mac users out there
have experience with sound cards and MIDI, I'd appreciate any advice on
what the best cards are. Thanks

the "ProAudioSpectrum 16" is a good buy at 1500 DM which might
convert to
600-800 $$$. It's made by a company named MediaVision.
It gives you 16 bit stereo Sampling at 44.1 Khz has an onboard Yamaha
YMF262 synthesizer chip. Included is a little external gadget that connects
to the NuBus or PDS card (depending on Mac-model) which gives you 4 stereo
and 1 mike inputs, headphone out, MIDI in, MIDI out and a joystick adaptor.
In Germany the game "Out of this world" and the Sequencer "Trax" are
included also.
The only drawback listed in the article is that editing long samples
on a regular Mac takes a really long time between stuff such as zooms, so
the thing is crawling then...
Other than that the card+external interface seems to be a good buy,
especially considering the enclosed software.

They've repackaged it recently... Out of this world is NOT included. Trax is
still there. MacroMind's SoundEdit Pro is now included though I discovered that
at present NONE of its effects work on 16bit sound. I talked with Macro and
they said they're working on a full 16bit version but had no info on when it
is due for relase. Also, due to technical problems the Yamaha chip is no
longer supported. Oddly though the chip is in fact on my board, apparently the
new boards will not have it. Anyone know how I could access it? I am happy
with what I got. Gotta go find a MIDI instrument to play with now.... :)
later...
