Can anyone confirm the existence of this bitmap? Several of us want to
slap this guy silly, but we'd like a plausible reason for doing so. :)
No, in case you were wondering, I don't know how to display the easter
egg, if it does exist.

Actually, this is in the 8100/110 ROMs, not the 80. Supposedly, doing the
secret about box easter egg will show you the picture. I believe this has
been confirmed by posters in other threads.

[MacWEEK] Mac the Knife
01.09.95 Volume 9 Number 2 THE NEWSWEEKLY FOR MACINTOSH MANAGERS
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cheerleader sidelines 8100/110
Mass gatherings of the kind witnessed last week on the outskirts of San
Francisco's cold but relatively well-heeled heart are a lot like a big
on-line conference with an abused software vendor running the show. The
difference, of course, is that you get to see the face of the poor
unfortunate who's on the receiving end of whatever the complaint du jour
might be.
Those of you who have been paying attention know the Knife is not the only
one going gray trying to isolate the cause of his Power Mac 8100/110's
power-on diagnostic RAM error, and you, too, may have entertained fantasies
of giving those at Apple more than a verbal lashing for neglecting to
inform us that the error message was caused by a known bug. Apple probably
figured that first-generation 8100 buyers would already have sprung for the
hot new 8100/110 by now anyway, right?
Wrong, actually, considering that since the model's introduction it is
easier to get an income tax increase past Speaker Newt than to find a
dealer with an 8100/110 in stock. It's taken a couple of weeks to pin it
down, but the person ultimately responsible for the shortage of the
flagship Apple product is former cheerleader, sometime choreographer and
all-around MTV girl role model Paula Abdul.
What's really going in?
You don't seriously believe that Ms. Abdul is now in charge of Mac product
forecasting? While that might account for many manufacturing mysteries, her
role in this week's fiasco is less direct. But if her talents were less
compelling, Apple wouldn't be jumping through hoops to avoid a possible
copyright infringement. You see, an impressionable engineer, apparently
smitten with all that is Abdul, included a picture of the performer in the
8100/110's ROMs. So rather than tallying up orders, Apple has been quietly
retrieving the first manufacturing run to replace the offending ROMs. Apple
was going to keep this one to itself, too. Its faith in its ability to keep
a secret is straight up inspiring, isn't it?

I have an 8100/110 and I tried typing "secret about box" and dragging
it to the desktop. I get the normal breakout game in a window....
I want to find this... any help is appreciated... Heck I'll even post it..

Hold down the Option key while selecting "About this Mac..." from the
apple menu. On most macs it will give you a b/w bitmap which I think is
supposed to be silicon valley (someone else's description) I think it
might give you the picture on the 8100/110.

As far as I know the Paula bmp was only in the 110 roms that's why it's
taking so long to get the things out. I had mine on backorder for two
months and I ordered the first week it was shipping.
Nope I tried it and got that black and white pict of mountains...
Any more ideas?
The picture's only on 8100/110's. I only saw it on prerelease machines,
so I don't know if it ever made it into production 110's. From what I
understand, the picture's not in the ROMs, but in the system software
on disk - it's only about 20K or so compressed.
The scan in question isn't Mrs. Estevez in the buff, just a picture
of two of the PMac engineers, one of whom is holding a poster of Paula.
One of those last minute Easter eggs you squeeze in when you've been
working too long. :-> Even so, Apple legal had an aneurism.
Actually, I almost had one myself, 'cause I know the guy holding the poster!

P.S. Since the picture's not on the 8100/80's, you can start slapping now.

No. It was in the the PowerPC Enabler 1.1 (which is why it is no longer on
Apple's ftp sites) which was replaced with 1.1.1.
Jack
Just imagine the "collector's value" of this machine. "Be the only
one on your block to have an Abdul PowerMac... "
Should command several hundred dollars on the used market one day!
Well, digging around Apple's ftp sites, I found the aforementioned
enabler on support.apple.com.
I didn't find any bitmap images, but I found a whole bunch of text
references, like "Paula's Desktop Macintosh" and "Paula's Favorite"..
If anyone knows where the devil the image is, and how to view it, let me
know! I deserve to see it, after since prank caused a delay shipment on my
8100/110 for a couple of weeks while new system software CDs were being
mass-duplicated!

Its susposed to be in the TIMD resource as a quicktime compressed jpeg or
such. I haven't figured out how to get to it though.
Jack
1. remove the 1.1.1 enabler and install the old 1.1 enabler. Reboot.
2. go to simpletext and type in lower case "secret about box" (no quotes)
3. Highlight the text and drag it to the desktop. Voila!
I haven't tried it yet.. enjoy.
Thanks to Matt McRae!
As soon as i figure out how to take a screen shot of it I will be happy
to email to to anyone that want's a copy.
Matt
Where is it? (I haven't looked anywhere yet) Do I have to do some sort of
CMD-CTRL-SHIFT-ETC to see it, or is it just a resource embedded somewhere?
