Album art and file size

I've gone and added a bunch of album art to my Library and discovered after
synching that I have much less free space on the iPod than before. Obviously
due to the increased file size now with the added art.

Is there any way to separate out the artwork from what gets synched with my
iPod. No sense having inflated files on the device.

iTunes stores album art "as is", so it's possible your pictures are huge
since it shouldn't be a significant increase in disk size for a reasonably
sized image.

The artwork appears to be embedded in the AAC file.

You can, of course, remove the artwork, but that's permanent.

It would be nice (but is so far impossible) to only remove the
artwork from the copy sent to the iPod. You might want to send Apple
some feedback, requesting this feature for a future release of iTunes.

As a possible workaround, you can make a backup copy of the original
file (do a get-info on a song to find the file's name and location)
and remove the artwork from the one left in iTunes. This way, the
artwork won't go into the iPod, and you can restore the backup if you
want the artwork back (say, for printing a CD jacket).
